SUWA MARU PASSENGER PLUNGES OVERBOARD
THE AIRMEN'S MORNING WORK

days ago when, I visited the hangar and spent some considerable time locking round...
What had been a very pleasant and enjoyable trip to all of the passengers on board the NY.K. liner Suwa Maru was marred on the morning of the 6th inst., when Gustano A. de Carvalho, a second- class passenger who was allowed to use the amenities of the first class, suddenly mounted the rails at the side of the vessel at which be had been standing, and, throw- ing up his arms, innde, what one eye-witness passenger described as, a "perfect dive."

The Purser of the ship, Mr. T Kai, who was standing quite close, with a cry of Man overboard,' at once dashed up to the Bridge, and informed the captain. Among all the passengers some confusion and excitement reigned, but on the Bridge, the captain at once too! over the command. At 10.30 8.10.
the alarm was given, and within one or two se conds some half-a-dozen life buoys had been thrown overboard on the aide, on which the man had dis appeared, while at the same time the engines were manipulated s that the vessel at once turned on her stem and men were despatched to the "Crow's Nest" to spot, if possible, any signs of the passeng er. The special lifeboat, held ready for any emergency, was instantly lowered, and proceeded to the place where Mr. Carvalho had been ob served. Although pulling Justily and reaching the indicated spot rapidly, no trace whatsoever was percafred of the unfortunate man, and after a forlorn search, "of more than an hour, the Commande was reluctantly forced to give the order to the lifeboat to return to the vessel.
This sad occurrence took place some 50 miles from Amoy, and 240 miles from Hong Kong-to be exut in Lat 33.42N. and Long 117.58E.

One of them, I gathered from their conver sation, had a weakness for Bias Ray for a chorus of, "what again? greeted his announcement that he had flown over that aren earlier in the morning.

It was a very interesting sight but to my mind it ended all too soon. No sooner than this plane had made a landing, than the the roar of the second machine died down and after describing one, of the neatest curves I ever bad the pleasure of seeing, it descended to the water and was promptly taken in hand by the mechanics who were waiting for it.
The pilots, after banding their machines over to the mechanics, adjourned to the office which is in the hangar, joining a few other pilots who had already done their share of flying for the day.

SUNNING RAILWAY BRIDGE NEARS COMPLETION
(From Our Own Correspondent)
The port of Kongmoon-Pak Kazi, on the West River' continues to develop. About 1,000 feet of new bund has been constructed along the West River on the north side of the railway wharf.
Very little is known of the de- ceased, save for the fact that he arrived on board only a faw minutes before the sailing of the vessel without a ticket, parchas ing his passage from the purée. At the present moincat fourteen foreign officers are attached to the R.A.F., not including those from India and the Dominions.
In the current financial year, by the way £20,000 will be received from foreign Governments in de frayment of the expenses incurred in the training of these officers.
The Railway Bridge. The new railway bridge under construction on the Sunning rail way at Kung Vik is gradually taking shape. Gangs of workmen are working both by day and night in ma attempt to have the bridge dom- pleted within the time set in the contract. When this bridge is finished, considerable time will be put off the run from Pak Kaat on the West River to Kung Yih. Pain and Good Harvest Expected. Planes for Kwangs!,
So far as the work in the hangar is concerned, I spent a lot of time watching the mechanics assembling the Avro-Avian planes that have been purchased from the Far East Aviation Company by the Kwangsi Government. These are very neat little machines and should prove a great asset to their purchasers.
In the hangar were a few light planes all privately owned, but I learned that one or two of them were for sale.,
YOUR VIEWS AND MINE!

Tigers in Africa!
Speaking of the Rev. Lewis Bryan, I was privileged to hear his entertaining talk last Tuesday and must say I came away tho roughly grateful to him for the amusement he supplied. I noticed f however that he spoke quite casu- ally ofbagging" tigers in Africa! This reminds me of what happened to Mark Twain once. He was to speak in a certain town in the Western part of the United States, but at the eleventh hour he was prevented from fulfilling the en- gagement. A humbler speaker was snatched up on the spur of the moment to fill the gap, and no mat ter what the speaker said, he was greeted with humour and applause, the audience "thinking, of course that Mark Twain was addressing them. This human failing is quite common and when an audience is amused, even stories of tigers in Africa, will go down well!
but fortunately the water did not come over.
The rice fields look well and give promise of a good harvest. There bas been a succession of, fine fruits. and vegetables in the markets, The fiches crop was apparently a satis factory one. Plums, peaches, wong pei, etc., are plentiful.
