BISHOP HALL'S ELOQUENT SERMON
AT ST. JOHN'S CATHEDRAL” ·
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE BEAUTY OF YUNNAN
Bishop Hall who has returned from an extensive visit to the outlying parts of his Diocese is back again in the Colony and on Sunday preached at St. John's Cathedral at both morning and evening service. We give below the eloquent. evening address, describing his impressions of the beauties of Yunnan and of the way in which he views the duties and op- portunities of the Christian Church in South China.. Bishop Hall is leaving Hong Kong at the end of this week for à Chris- tiau Conference at Kuling.
THE BUDDHA AND THE CHRIST
Bishop Hall said:- Will you come with me imagi- zation to a temple or ute hills above the city of Yunnaufa? Look ing put from it you have a view surpassing in sheer beauty our Eng lish Lakes. I saw it on a day of aun and rain and wind. The hills, green and grey and black as they receded tier on tier into the far distance were dappled with patches of cloud and sunlight. Three rain. storms stalked in an orderly pro- cession across the plains as though light canvas
streens were being moted across
The parallel is exact. The early Christian missionaries set Bethle- hem-Christmas, the birth of the Son of God in the heart of the old pagan fire worship by which our ancestors hoped to give new life to the wintering sun, and set it once more climbing higher and higher into the heavens to bring warmth and foliage and hopes back to a cold and hungry world.
