JAPAN'S FOREIGN
TRADE
OPTIMISM ENTERTAINED IN BUSINESS CIRCLES
TOKYO, June 21.
An optimistic view is being enter- mined in Japanese business circles regarding the expected favourable trade results of the direct future,, namely, during the present fiscal"]
year.
Following the favourable trade balance of Y.10,610,000 registered during the second ten days of the present month, which was Y,4,000,- 000 more than that of the previous ten days, it is expected that there will be a slight reverse during the next ten days while it was predict-

Business was reported early in the morning at 30 for August. There were sellers at 29 11/16 June, 20 July and 29 August, buyers at "29 13/16 June/July and. 2215/16 August.'

Merchants were quoted at 111 for Doar delivery.
Shanghai Dollars,
The main factor for the favour able trend is attributed to the enormous increase in exports to Manchuria, in which there was un increase of not less than 440 per cent. during the first five months of this year, in comparison with 1002. Japan's exports to China likewise showed an increase, sixteen per cent, during the same period and the hope is entertained that, with the gradual disappearance of the anti-Japanese sentiment, business dealings with China will further in- crense.
Japan cannot expect any trade with India for the present while she cannot enjoy a gooti "exportį trade with America so long as America maintains her, inflation policy.

The main points of the first scheme which is purely national in character, are as follows:
Owners would be under no compulsion to scrap their ships,
and would be free to decide whe ther to take advantage of the scheme or not.
The scheme would be financed by dues collected, on a net too. nage basis, from all national ships bringing cargoes into Unit- ed Kingdom parts. The fund so created would be available for the purchase of vessels for scrap- ping.
Only vessels of "100 net tons and over would be affected, and special conditions would apply to passengers liners and tankers.. The scheme would- not include any provision for replacement of tonnage:

Azia Landa, Limited, has received the following report from their New York correspondenta, E. A. Pierco.& Co. It looks as though rails and industrials are going to break through the previous resistance and establish new highs. Traders, in long industrials and rails think that we should be advised to take some profits on any sharp run-ups. Wheat: There has been heavy 'world-wide buying of all varieties of grains and further sensational reports of crop damage in the Spring! wheat country. Traders are watching the London Conference closely. Cotton: Speculative demand has been induced by the strength of grains and an optimistic report of a crop curtailment development. There have been some beneficial rains in the East Helt but the West Belt is dry. Silver: After a higher opening silver was sold off at near the previous close. The trend was reversed later on beavy commission house buying. influenced by the pronounced strength in other markets and the fact that France and. Britain agree in principle in the reduction of gold coverage and the use of silver in part as a metallic reserve. Business Done: 4,830,000 shares,
