GOING ALOFT

SEAMEN'S DUTY LAID DOWN

'BY THE ADMIRALTY

J

London. A recent "refusal of a seaman to obey an order to go aloft lias suggested that there may be derstand that it is their duty to go some seamen who do not fully un-

aloft when required to do so..

For that reason the Board of Ad- miralty, in Fleet Orders, desire it to be made plain that to go aloft is part of the duty of every sea-

tan,

Strange as it may seem in an age of power-driven ships, there are even in a modern man-o'-war many pensions on which it is necessary to send men aloft.

For example, when a ship is dressed with flags in honour of Bome distinguished visitor or na. tional celebration, the bunting has to be attached to the mastheads by seamen. Again, hands may be sent aloft to repair wireless aerials or saint topmasts and trucks.

This sort of work calls for steady nerves, and it is possible that cer- tain men might hesitate to under- do so was laid down in the regu take it unless their obligation to lations. Such, one gathers, is the inner significance of the new Ad- miralty Flect Order.
