Sanitary and Medical Services
HOW PUBLIC HEALTH IS CARED FOR
HOSPITALS AND AN ACTIVE PREVENTION SYSTEM
The city of Macno is considered the most densely populated area of the world. For an area of 14.5 Km. g for the whole colony includ ing the two islands of Taipa and Coloane its population amounts to 170,000 inhabitants which gives a very high average per sq. kilo.
metre.
In spite of this density of popula tion the colony is well provided with sanitary and hospital estab- lishments to meet the needs of the colony in this respect.
Four general hospitals, one isola- tion hospital, two leper stations. and eight medical posts (two of which in the Islanda of Taipa and Coloane) comprise the institutions the Government has placed at the disposal of the colony in case of need, These establishments are specially maintained for the native population and thus it will be "noticed that the service provided by them is mostly rendered free of charge.

Goa was famous from quite early. times, as evidenced by frequent re- ferences in Sanskrit literature: It was known by a wealth of poetic names such as Gomant, Goapuri; Copakapur, etc., and held in great esteem. A number of Aryans are said to have settled there from Tir- hatrapur(or modern Tirhut) under the leadership of a Parasuram Coming to more historical times, we and that the Kadambas of Banavasi held "away in. When Vasco da Gama landed in India, Goa was under the Bijapur kings, and in 1810 Affon to de Albuquerque took it from then.
