INDIA'S GAINS IN THE

"

U.S.A.

For the first time in tea history, the imports of India tea into the United States of America have ex- ceaded those of Ceylon tea.

This fact is disclosed in statistics a period of nine compiled for months ending March 31, 1933,"

The comparative figures are follows:---

>

1039 lbs.

1933 Ibs.

Ceylon .... 19,183,317 15,426,110 India

10,913,301 17,173,343

For the corresponding nine months five years ago, the Ceylon ten imported by the U.S.A. totalled 20,219,314 lbs., whereas India tea amounted to only 13,520,305 lbs.

Directed by a Ceylonese. The gains made by, India at the expense of Ceylon are attributed to the success of the propaganda cam- paign carried out by the Indian Tea Bureau, which, ironically enough, is directed by a Ceyloncee, Mr. L. Beling.

Mr. Beling first went to the United States in 1880, when he was. associated with Ceylon's exhibit at the Chicago World's Fair. His official connection with Ceylon tea was again revived when the last Ceylon Commissioner, Mr. W. A. Courtney, engaged him as tea ex- pert in 1903. Mr. Beling also had been associated with several New York tea firms.

In 1927, the Indian Tea Cess Co- mittee appointed Mr. Beling ita agent in the United States.

Frankly we do not altogether like the looks of the market. The weakness of the stock market has influenced commodity prices Wheat: Professional operators and commission houses have been the chief sellers but scale-down orders offered fair resistance. Washington reports that the Farra Relief plan will not be effective this season had little affect. Cotton: There was Liquidate and Southern salling throughout the day. Silver: The Trade and New York banks caused the decline and scattered buying was not aggressive. Business Done: 3,890,000 shares."

Coffee Trade Journal."

It is the story of a merchandising idea, in which newspaper and periodical

advertising, cooking schools, motion pictures, radio, home makers' educational service, expert tea blending, original packet designing and dealer's aids, asso ciated with the. Map of India trade mark design, were co-ordinated in a well-rounded campaign. It makes inspiring reading, and contains a lesson which propagandists in gen- eral may study with interest and profit.

The two outstanding results of the campaign have been the winning of 175 brands of tea for the Map of Tadia emblem and am increase, in the imports of India ten to the United States of over 4,000,000 ths, The growers of India tea bave. heen making propaganda for their product in America for many years, but nothing approaching the inten sive advertising and salesmanship methods which characterize the Isteet, campaign have ever before been attempted in America by any tea or coffee country.

Success of the Trade Fair

SATISFACTION AMONG EXHIBITORS

SINGAPORE May 20, Trade is following the Flag very successfully at the Great World, where the British Trade Fair is Dow in full swing...

The fair should help considerab ly towards the improvement of trade in Singapore, and buge crowds that have attended every. evening since the opening indicate the interest aroused in British goods.

On all sides there are expressions of praise of the way in which the whole thing has been arranged, and there is little doubt that the pri mary object of the fair, to interest- the local public in things British, is being achieved. Exhibitors re- port excellent progrem, and a large amount of business is being done at the Fair itself, while or- ders totalling many thousands of dollara in value have been booked. It has been suggested that the Fair should be extended over the one week which was originally in- tended, and this suggestion has been considered by the Committee of the Fair, the chairman of which is Mr. Boultor, the British Trado Commissioner. At the moment, it is understood, no decision has been taken on this point, but there is little doubt that an extension would be heartily welcomed by the ma fority of the exhibitors, who have expended much time and money to make the Fair a success.

There have been large crowdą at the exhibition every evening, since it was opened, the Chinese in per ticular evidencing very keen in terest in the display.

The Main Idea.

Ons small criticism has been offered. It is that there has been a tendency among the exhibitors to regard the Fair as: & market rather than an exhibition, and for that reason it was getting away from the original ides of the pro moters, which was rather to ad-
