Asia Lands, Limited, has received the following report from their New York correspondents, E. A. Pierce & Co. We think that today's resump- tion of strength indicates that the market will carry through and we would anticipate higher prices all around. Wheat: Long positions were replaced on the strong stock market, inflation talk, Winnipeg reports of good export sales, possibly to Russia, and favourable weather. Cotton: Sentiment has improved decidedly, in line with the stock and grains markets. Washington news is considered as being constructive. Silver: Prices at the opening tended upward but trading was relatively light. Commission house interests are light on both sides. Business Done: 3,140,000 shares.

A Precautionary Measure. Although, as suggested above, the psychological effect of the Fund's huge increase may be such as to remove the necessity for the use of any large part of the additional resources, the step announced yes terday is a very necessary precau tion. The growing distrust of con- ditions in many other countries has led during the past year to very formidable inflowings of foreign halances to London, Some day, when confidence returns, these bal- anees will be taken back to their own native sources, and it is just as essential that adequate prepara- tions should be made against the exchange effects of the reversal of recent capital movements as it was a year ago to provide resources for smoothing out fluctuations unjusti hed by the economic situation,"

In so far as the additional re-

sources are used, there will be a corresponding increase in the real active volume of, Treasury bills, and

the increase (on paper at any rate) of the total of the Floating. Debt will draw, greater attention to the desirability of a funding operation on a more effective scale than that which is now being at tempted by the weekly sales of 21 p.c. Conversion Loan. At the sanie time, Treasury bills issued in con. nection with the Fund's operations aro in a different category to bills issued for financing ordinary Ex- thequer expenditure, for they are represented by equivalent tangible assets in the form of gold or cur- rencies.
