SELDOM has such, enthusiasm been displayed by the public of Hong Kong, as that evoked by the British Empire Exhibition and Fair, which was officially opened by H.E the Governor at Kowloon yesterday, Throughout the day, from noon until night, thousands of people of every age and class swarmed across the Harbour to visit the Peninsula Hotel, which has been converted for the, occasion into an enormous stere of the Empire's produce. It was a truly impressive sight and one hopes that the labour and money which have been expended on the Fair will not have been in vain. The majority of the visitors expressed surprise that so many goods with which they were familiar came from various parts of the Empire, for in the past it has been the general habit to buy in a haphazard way. without troubling to enquire the country of origin. One of the principal results of the exhibition, it is hoped, will be to impress on the purchasing public the superior qualities of British produce and manufactures, so that in future they will stipulate when buying goods that they must be British. Whatever those who criticise the usefulness of the Fair may say, there can be ub doubt that such wonderful publicity as of all and sundry." No sooner Iing some of the exhibits, and what

Needless to say, there were very many different types, but I did not think so when I first got into the Hotel, for what with the place absolutely cram full of visitors, I hardly had time to look round, so busy was I trying to keep my feet But as. I got used to the thing I strolled casually round the different stalls, picking up bits of conver- sations here and there, and at the same time I duly took in all that was going on!

One of the first persons I saw was Sir Henry Pollock, calm and collected as ever, se he made his way up the crowded stairway, "Here," I said, "is the quiet dignity which commands the respect

I continued my way up the stairs, and at the landing saw Sir Shou- o Chow talking to a party of Chinese ladies and gentlemen. Sir Shou-son, of course, represents the Chinese gentleman of the old school, wise in the ways of East and West.

In addition, it makes them directly familiar with varieties of British foods, machinery, hardware, motor cars and household requirements. There must be few visitors who inspected the stalls who eaunot remember the names of at least a dozen products that were on exhibition, and we trust that when next they make a purchase at their local stores they will make certain of getting those products.

Up on the first floor of the Hotel, I came across a type of the poor but honest Chinese, who might be placed under the category of the very easily pleased" There were rows of nice, comfortable chairs along the whole length of the first floor and an about ten of there were seated Chinese fokia. They locked so pleased with themselves that I doubted whether they would have changed placee with the Prince of Wales then !

What really surprised me was the large crowd of Chinese that I saw there. There were coolies, amahs, house boys and cooks, all taking a look-see what "master belong talkee too muchee British number one goods." Peasants from the country" railed up in their numbers to add

touch of colour to the scene and it was really amusing to watch the amazed expressions on their faces as they saw a model lift working in one of the stalls. To them it was a aine-day wonder, and I am sure they have not yet solved how the

new model Ford V8 car revolved round and round on a simple stand f "A number of Indian soldiers in civilian clothing and soine "watch- men were also making a tour of inspection round the Fair, and although they might have under- stood a little of what they saw, I cannot but feel that they must have had words with each other regard

Young Hong Kong There, "Young Hong Kong" turned up in full force. When I saw young Hong Kong, I mean the young men and ladies of the different com munities who take an active part in the social and business life of the Colony, and it was really good to see these people showing sich an interest in the goods exhibited.

The bright hued costumes of "the Chinese ladies lont a charming effect to the scene, and these con- trasted with the equally bright dresses of their Western sisters slaved up very well indeed:

Last but not least, there was the type that is found in all such oc casions. I refer to the people who went with no intention of buying anything but determined to come away with armfuls of free samples. One exhibitor told me that a cors |tain man went up to his stall three times during the course of the afternoon and on each occasion ask-

The exhibiting firms are to be strongly commended on the manner in which they have supported this Exhibition, since by uniting in their efforts they bave made this year's show an outstanding success of which the Colony may justly feel proud. Considering the difficulties, the delaya and the last minute rush caused by a flustered then began a search for theed for a sample of his goods.
