Finals at Ealing
MISS SCRIVEN OUTPLAYS MISS NUTHALI
(Special Air-Mail Service)
LONDON, May 2. Though the sun shone, the weather looked very threatening at Ealing yesterday, but fortunately the two singles finals were finished without any interruption. "Two Davis Cup players, P. D. Spence, of South Africa, and H. F. David, fought out the men's singles and provided a large crowd of spectators with an interesting, well-fought match, full of vicissitudes of fortune, and, after the first set, which was rather scrappy with plenty of really good tennia.
Though played at a fast pace. both men made far too many mis takes in the first set, the best stroke in which was probably the real old- fashioned Renshaw" smash with which Spence finished it at 7-0. after having had a 6-3 lend snatch. rd from him. Dayid was twice within a point of 3-love lead in the second set, playing well: but Spence, hitting very hard, returned to the attack, and, as in the first set, again, led 5-3" and came within a paint of the match in the next Kaine. But David saved himself well with some lovely passing ahots. and, though Spence got ahead again at 6-8, the Midlander took the next three gamre for the set and squared the match.

It is disparagement to the men to say that most people had probably coine to see the first meet ing of Mist Nathall and Miss Seriven, whose respective merits often canvassed, had never been nut te the test,. It must be said that the match was a disappointing one. Miss Scriven won it, in two 6-4 sets: she has been seen to play a much better game than she did yes terday. She was, no doubt, wise not to make the pace for Miss Nathall: but, even taking that into account, she seemed to be unable to make a fast drive, when she had complete control of the situation. Her activity was a great asset, but retrieving alone will not win big

Brown was disqualified in the tenth round and ordered to his corner amid an amazing uproar, which was renewed when Crowley left the ring. Brown had launched a whirlwind body attack in the ninth round, during which Crowley was put down for two counts. The Lon- doner was very weary at the start of the next round and was warned the by the referee for lying on champion. Brown then måde an- other terrific attack on the body and Crowley again sank to the floor.
The referee at once started to count, though there were cries of Foul" from Crowley's corner. Crowley got up after a short count and Brown immediately rushed in again, but ns Crowley crumpled up and sank to the floor the referee or dered Brown to his corner. The blow which ended the fight seemed
