MACAO WEEKLY SUPPLEMENT

THE INDUSTRIES OF MACAO CLIMATE OF MACAO MACAO'S POLICE FORCE

Fishing: Junk Building: Fireworks: Agricultural Products

We give below a summary of some of the chief industries of Macao. The figures are big enough to show that in its own quiet way it is a busy and prosperous place. It may not compare with Detroit, or Sheffieid, or Wigan, but there is still place enough in the world for these products of food, and other articles of a nature fundamental to life,

The commercial possibilities of Macao are well worth considera- tion by those who have money lying idle at the banks which they do not know how to invest.

THE FISHERIES

The industry arising out of the fisheries is extensive and important. Almost two thousand high-sena, fishing junks are employed in the fisheries and a large fleet of smaller éraft waits upon the fishing vessels, and when these junks lio at anchor in the Inner Harbour they present a very picturesque effect. In many parts of the Portuguese Colony, fish may be observed in the process of drying curing, salting, and other methods of preserving the catch, while the salt fish produced nt Macao is much appreciated by the Chinese being famous for a delicious flavour. Tho total value of the fishing exceeds $5,000,000 a

yeur.

THE TOBACCO FACTORIËS

There are five factories ongaged in the preparation of tobacco from the raw leaf. The business is very extensive and, though entirely with- out the aid of steam power, the fe tories can boast of being unongal the largest of the kind in South China

During the hot season Macao, be ing open to the South West Mon soon, is more agreeable and salu brions than "Hong Kong. The fol- lowing data are the means of ob servations during the period 1021-

Child Vagrants.

As to cases of children who are in trouble or difficulty, sometimes they are sent to their fainilica; but, in many instances, where they are strays they are sent to a house of detection. For girls, the prob- lein has been settled by the organ- ization of a "House of Regenera- tion which, together with the ** Infants' Asylum,” now entrusted. to the Canossian Institute, has done excellent work. For boys, the problem has been more difficult wing to the proximity of the Chinese territory. Difficulty is also experienced with mendicants, lepers and lunatica who constantly arrive and have to be attended to. Some of the boys are sent back to their home villages and some, who need education only, to the Orphanage. The number of abandoned children is large, but sooner or later parents call at the Departinent, and follow. ing proper identification the child- ren are returned to them.

Lepers are sent to the Chinese Hospitals pending exuitination and analysis inade at the Government: Hospital and Laboratory. They are repatriated or

sent to Macao's

Leper Station at Colowan Island. Lunatics are sent to the Chinese Hospital and sometimes returned to their families. The question of a Lanátic Asylum is engaging the attention of the Authorities, Mon- dicants, who need medical attend- ance are treated at the Chinese Hospital and repatriated it..not registered
