THEFT OF TILES

**WELL ORGANISED ATTEMPT," SAYS MAGISTRATE

Sentence of six weeks' hard labour was imposed by Mr. Mynne-Jones at Kowloon Magistracy yesterday on two Chinese who were charged with the larceny of 34 tiles from Shamshuipo."

The first defendant denied larceny but admitted receiving the pro perty, while the second defendant pleaded guilty to stealing.

Inspector Tuckett, who prose cuted, said after the tiles were found missing, a report was made to the Police, who found traces of the wheel-marks of a lorry near the spot where the tiles were stored. Inquiries at various garages in Shaushuipo resulted in a driver coming forward to say that he had taken a load of tiles to Un Long Following this clue, the Police found the man, who had bought the tiles and he in turn pointed out the first defendant as the man who had sold them to him. The first de- fendant then pointed out the second defendant.

The Magistrate: This seems to have been well-organised. What is the value of the tiles?

KING AND QUEEN AT ALDERSHOT

OLDEST CORPS AND YOUNGEST

HONOUR FOR ROYAL SCOTS

(Special Air-Mail Service)

LONDON, April 25, The King and Queen have spant the day with the troops at Alder- shot. Their visit was marked by a pleasing minimam of formality, which gave to the proceedings what one may appropriately term "family atmosphere."

1

The sense of the King being "among his soldiers, and their families, struck a deeper note than visit EN essentially ceremonial would have done, and was the more keenly appreciated.

No outward demonstrativeness could have given to the perceptive onlooker such an impression of deep feeling.

The keynote of the netual pro- gramme might be summed up in the words" oldest and youngest," These two chief features were pro- vided by the oldest regiment in the Army, the Royal Scots, and the youngest, the Royal Tank Corps. The one has just celebrated its three hundredth birthday, while the other is not yet ten years old as a per manent unit although before formal incorporation it had had eight years of illustrious history.

Another piquant contrast was be tween the forms in which the or- ders were given: Both units, it is true, were controlled by "word of command." But while the parade- ground of the oldest regiment echoed with the familiar shouting orders, the youngest Was of

orders over the maneuvred by ether"-by soft spoken cominands communicated by radio-telephony.

The King listened in 'to these or- ders through a loud-speaker placed near him, while the actual tanks were sometimes a mile distant,
