There has been a tendency to keep dealings in futures within, narrow mits as a result of the fluctuationg in the exchange rate, and these Auctuations, coupled with the firm- ness of basis in the United States, have made it difficult to arrange business in American cotton" for shipment to this country. Though cotton prices at Liverpool have re- mained steady, uncertainty as to the future trend has made yarn and cloth buyers unwilling to operate, while the difficulties of the Man chester market have been increased because of the dependence on the dollar of many of the South Ameri cin

Japan's gains and losses from the developments in the Tpited States will depend partly on the course of yen prices for American cotton and on the extent to which exchange for outstanding contracts for American cotton has already been covered; the losses might be cou- siderable if the devaluation of the dollar became the signal for an ex- tension of exchange dumping duties. in other countries

Azia Landa, Limited, has received the_following report from their New York correspondents, E. A. Pierce & Co. The market confirmed yestar- day's impression specifically that there is no great amount of liquida tion taking place. Individual stocks have been tested and we think they have shown a relatively strong position. We would buy again on another day's firmness, Wheat: Lower cables, weakness in Winnipeg and increased Kansas estimates caused the price to decline. Cotton: Lower sterling quotations induced considerable selling from domestic and foreign sources but the market was well supported, Silver Com- mission House Liquidation was heavy. The Gold Embargo."
It is important to notice that the gold export embargo and the belief that inflation will be resorted to have not been the only causes of the advance in cotton pricea in the United States. In his usual weekly cabled report from New York to the Manchester Guardian. Commercial, Mr. G. W. Fooshe refers to "a de- sire on the part of speculators and investors to convert cash into major commodities, including cotton." He adds, however, that buying has also been stimulated by the larger de mand for actual cotton and for oot ton goods, the delay in the start of the new crop, the improvement in general business, and the belief that the Washington Conference will put international trade on a mora satisfactory basis"
