MECHANICAL FISH

DETECTOR

FOR TAKING SOUNDINGS. HOPES FROM A NEW DEVICE

A remarkable device, which not only gives the depth of water un- der a ship and the uature of the bed of the sea, but may ultimate- ly be able to report the presence of particular kinds of fish in the neighbourhood of the ship, was re- ferred at the annual meeting, in London of the Marconi Interna.. tional Marine Communication Company.

Mr. F. S. Hayburn, the Chair- man, said that, this device, koown as the Echometer, was manufac- tured by a subsidiary company, and was used by British trawlers. It embodied an optical system for indicating the depth of water un- der ship. It was extremely sim plein operation and could be manipulated by any member of the ship's crew.

Soundings could be obtained In- stantaneously by pressing Buy ton. The presence of this gear on board ship undoubtedly encourag ed the taking of woundings fre North Wall-Odin Otus, Tarot quently, even during the most ad tulo.
