THE VOLUNTEERS
Possibly we may be accused of inconsistency, and the traditional failings of
"perfidious Albion," in attacking the United States "big navy" policy one day in this column, and urging the youth of Hong Kong to join the Volunteers ISS. the vory next day. But there is all the difference in the world between armed forces genuinely for defen:e,. and armaments built, not primarily for war, but to profit certain interests, and to be used for bullock ing through any policy that seems to the advantage of one's country, quite regardless of the other point of view. Armaments cannot be abolished any more than police and prisons. There are virile nations still in, a state of aggressive bar burism, and against these more ad- vanced countries have every right to defend themselves. A fleet on the scale that the United States "big navy" party is demanding is hot needed to repel an attack across the Atlantic Pacific either
Ar Tuesday's inspection of the Volunteers by II.E. Major-General BORRETT, there were 280 men and 27 officers on parade, or in other words a couple of companies. The General made the pointed temark that there were 1,000 men available in the Colony who were not taking part in its protection. If a crisis came they could only be used in a Labour Corps, and their "eleventh hour valour and enthusiasm would be as

SIR CLAUD SEVERN
Memorial Service in St. John's Cathedral...
** A HAPPY MEMORY !',
A memorial service was held yesterday in St. John's Cathedral for the Inte Sir Cland Sovern, K.C.M.G.
The Ilev. N. V. Halward took the
service assisted by the Rev. A. D. Steward, the Bishop of Victoria pronounced the Blessing and an eloquent sermon was preached by the Rev. G. T. Waldegrave.
The service though short was an impressive one, as most of those prosent had honour and personally loved Sir Claud.
Among the congregation were: prominent members of the Govern- ment, the consular service and the business community.
Order of Service, The order of the service was as follows:-
Hymn: "Let Saints on earth"; opening Sentences, the 3rd Pealm; the Lesson,, Revalations VII, D; Hymn, Happy. are they," the ser mon, followed by final prayers and the Blessing.
The Sermon.
The Rev. G. T. Waldegrave said: In the various accounts of our Lord's Words and actions I often think that there is one thing mis- ing, a description of the impression taken away by a stranger after a single heart to heart talk with him.. I am quite sure that that man would say that the Master was especially interested in his case, aud most sympathetic. In later years he would add "He was great friend of mine and it was a very happy experience to be with Him."
A Personal Friend,
I do not know at what period in his life Sir Claud Severn heard the call of Christ and decided to throw himself so far as he was able into active participation in work under the Cross, but he surely followed the example of Him who called Himself the Son of Man in show- ing genuine interest in and sym- pathy with all around him: 50 much so that we, who know him hero, the representatives of I sup- pose every branch and activity of the life in this Colony fell that wa could individually claim him as a personal friend, who in conver- sation made us sure that we alone were the very people he wanted to see just then; and that our busines was all that really mattered.
