THE PHILHARMONIC

SOCIETY

President on the Terms of Membership

DIFFICULTIES OF PRODUCING GILBERT AND SULLIVAN

The annual meeting of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Society was holl yesterday in the Cathedral Hall, Major H. B. L Dowbiggin, O.B.E being in the chair.

The notice convening the meeting- having been read the chairman addressed the meeting as follows:

The President in his speech last year stated that the balance at the Bank was 823.70, You will see from the accounts that the surplus. is now $113.74. A large number of Grdinary members are, however, in- cluded in the Sundry Debtors, and as it appears that there is some inisconception regarding the finan- cial responsibility of members, some of whom think that when they do not take part in a show that they should not be called on for their subscription, will read the rule dealing with the matter. Rule 23 rends, inter alia. The annual sub- scription for ordinary members of the Society shall be 83 payable as from March 1. I hope that this will make the matter clear, and that those members who have not paid their subscription for the past year will do so as soon aa possible, Membership.

As to membership, you will see that the number of Vice-Presidents has dropped by three, and I should like to thank these gentlemen for their support of the Society. The number of subscribers remains the ame, ordinary members, however, have dropped, but still remain over ane hundred. In this connection, may recommend the advantages of becoming a subscriber. The sub- scriber pays $12 per anuum and receives two tree tickets for one performance of each opera or con cert given, with priority of book ing:

SPIRITED PROTEST BY

SHAREHOLDER

DIRECTORS SHOULD NOT ACCEPT THEIR FEES: ALLEGATION OF

NEGLIGENCE

GANDE PRICE EMBEZZLEMENTS

RECALLED

Speaking at the Annual Meeting of Messrs, Gande Price and Oompany, Limited, Mr. O. Bond, in criticising what he described as ' "the negligence of the directors," said that in his opinion they were not justified in accepting director's fees for the year. Mr. Bond referred to the defalcations by Messrs. Gande Price's Japanese Harbour runner and said that as the directors, through their neglig ence, have caused chareholders to lose over $24,000, they should not charge the company their fees.

The meeting was presided over by Mr. Kenneth Chan. Others present were Messrs. Leung Yan Fo, Wong Sik Chung (Directors), Chau Tung Sang, B. H. Phillips, John Fleming, D.. Rumjahn, 0. Boni and J. N. Wong (Secretary),.
