OUR SCOTTISH AIR-MAIL. LETTER
(Continued frum Page 1). significance will be attached to this conferonos by an exhibition which is being organised in Glasgow in the same week. The technical side. of the film industry is still a closed book to many people who are interested in production, ana while the Glasgow exhibition is not being held primarily to satisfy amateur curiosity it will, never- theless, offer an opportunity that has not before been presented to amateur film producers in Scot
land.
NEW ROYAL SCOTTISH » ACADEMY ASSOCIATES-
Three new associates have been elected by the Royal cottish Academy, Edinburgh:-
Mr. J. Maclauchlan Milne, of Dundee (painter).
Mr. James Kay, of Whistlefield, Dumbarton (painter),
Mr. Benno Schotz, of Glasgow (sculptor).
The Academy conferred honorary membership on Sir George Mac- donale, who has been elected Pro fessor of Antiquities to the Acade my, and Professor Robert K. Han- nay, elected Professor of Ancient. History.
The election of two Glasgow artists-one a painter and the other soulptor-will help in a small measure to give better repre- sentation to the West of Scotland. Without such représentation the Academy can hardly claim, as it does, to be a national institution, and the proportion of seven full members for Glasgow-to a total of 25, exclusive of non-resident members, is still too small in view of the city's importance as an art centre. In the Associate member- ship the number for the West of Scotland is now nine in a total of 27.
SHIPPING REVIVAL SCHEME
&
Lord Angus Kennedy, declares that he is very gratified with the welcome many prominent, shipping leaders have given to the pro- gramme he is advocating as means of helping the revival of A Scot the shipping industry. with many years' experience of shipbuilding on the Clyde, Lord Angus advances his suggestions chiefly in the belief that recovery will follow the expansion of Em pire trade. They include statu tory provisions for the carrying, of Empire goode in Empire ships, extension of the work of the Em pire Marketing. Board to encou rage the sale of British goods' in the Dominions and Colonies, and A wider recognition of the. power of press advertising. Hammering at the Government he described to me as shoer folly, but he maintains that shipyards would resume acti vity if the banks would advance long-term loans for new building and the scrapping of obsolete craft.
