Record Of A Very Gallant Regiment
AN EVENT OF UNIQUE INTEREST TO THE SERVICES IN HONG KONG TAKES PLACE TO-DAY, WEATHER PERMITTING WHEN HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR, SIR WILLIAM FEEL, K.0.M.G.. K.B.E,, WILL PRESENT WITH TRADITIONAL CEREMONIAL NEW COLOURS TO THE FIRST BATTALION, THE SOUTH WALES BORDERERS (14th REGIMENT), AT A SPECIAL, PARADE, BEING HELD AT 10.30 AM.
The South Wales Borderers have a long and gallant record, dating back to 1689, when the regiment was raised by Sir William Dering under commission from King William II, and known as the 24th Regiment.
A hard-fighting regiment Blenheim is the first of their battle honours and Kemmel the last. Under Marlborough, and Wellington, in Spain, in the little wars" of the nineteenth century and, "dur ing the Great War, in all parts of the world from Mons to Tsingtao, they bore their part.
The story of the saving of the Old Colours in the Zulu War of 1879, fully told below, 13 a record cf gallantry which the regiment rightly treasures.
THE PROGRAMME
The programme for to-day will be as follow:-
The Four Guards with the Escort to the Colours (No. 1 Guard) on the right are drawn up in line.
The Old Colours are in the front on the left of the Line, guarded by sentries.
