RUMJAHNS RETAIN DOUBLES TITLE FOR LAMMERTS AUCTIONS
9TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR
GOLDMAN AND FINCHER PUT UP GOOD FIGHT
FINEST FINAL SEEN IN
RECENT YEARS.
In par of the best tendis finals played in recent years, S. A ad H. D. Rumjaba won the Open Doubles Champlonskip of the Colony for the ninth consecutive year on the stand court of the Hong Kong Cricket Club yesterday afternoon after Bve hard. fought sets.
Their opponents, E. C. Fincher und 1.. Goldman, put up a urprisingly good night, and in fact they looked like carrying off the match at several stages of the game. Both men were at their best, but Goldman's display was a revelation. He was strong in almost every department, and some of his recoveries were reminis #cent of "3.A.", at his best.
THRILL IN ALMOST EVERY STROKE
On yesterday's game, one had, REMARKABLE RECOVERIES Fincher and Goldman played ex- he impression that the Rumjahns ill not reign supremo for long. traordinarily well at this stage, deiral understanding, which making some remarkable recoveries, such a vital phase of their game, but even taking their wonderful was lacking at several points, while work into consideration, they were heir overhead work proved dis-xory fogunate to have won this quieting even to their staunchest
supportora.
Itegarding the play itself, it is safe to say that the spectators had their money's worth. There sa thrill in almost every stroke, it is doubtful whether such at exchanges as were served up yesterday have been equalled in a local tournament before, Drives, mashes and low volleys followed one another in quick succession and kept the big gallery on their feet The whole way through.
·A GOOD START The challengers started off well, leading by four games to one at one stage, and despite a spirited ohallenge by the champions won He first set at 03: Goldman pitting in some good work, while Fincher was steady, but S.A." ee disappointing. At the resumption, the Rumjahns appeared to be once again on top. They dominated the play, and only spirited resistance on the part of the challengers prevented thein from winning the set casier than they did at Ga. Fincher and Gold- Jan seemed to have found the champions' chief weakness and com- menced a lobbing campaign, which

"H.D." was not as steady as usual, bur if he was not playing his usual game, one suspects he was put off by his partner's poaching. His volleying again proved to be his forte, and be revelled in these oxchanges at close quarters.
Fincher's drives lacked sting, but. his net work was good. He gave
fime all-round display, and show- el good anticipation and judgment. His ground strokes also were of a high standard, while his defensive work left little room for improve ment.
Goldman was brilliant but caDE not be said to have been consistent, it drives were in perfect working order, while his lobbing proved disconcerting to the Rumjahns, but he was guilty of some foolish mis- takes. His recoveries were nothing short of marvellous, and his dis play yesterday must rank as his best on local tennis courts.
The full scores were 3-6, 6-2, 6-7, 6-9 and 7-6 in favour of the Rum jahns.
