That the Automatic Exchange both in Hong Kong and Kowloon are being extended was revealed by the Hon. Mr. C, Gordon Mac- kle, Chairman, at the annual general meeting of the Hong Kong Telephone Co., Ltd., at Exchange Building yesterday.

J. E. Besa yesterday afternoon appeared before Mr. Justice wood on a' charge of obtaining 850 by false pretences. It will be recalled that Bosa was discharged on Tues- day in connection with a charge of fraudulent conversion and with uttering forged receipts.

THE SUI TAI TRAGEDY

CHIEF OFFICER FOUND SHOT

The 3.8. Sui Tai, running betwee Hong Kong and Macao was the scene of a distressing, tragedy yes terday morning, when the chief officer, Mr. John Gentle Smith, was found in the officers' bathroom with a bullet-wound through the heart.

The Sui Tai arrived in port from Macao at 9.40 on Tuesday night, and at 6.30 yesterday morning cabin boy on going into the officers bathroom, found Mr. Smith lying on his back, dead. His arms were folded across his chest and his singlet was saturated with blood from a wound near the heart. Mr. J. A. Fraser, Assistant At- torney-General, prosecuting, said, outlining the case that the ac cused had an account in the Na tional City Bank in October and November last. At the end of October the Bank sent a statement of Besa's account to the defendant and received an acknowledgement from him. The statement showed Besa's credit balance as $12,91. The defendant had paid in 810 since that date, but since October 13, the balance had been under $50.
