The goat of reboring cylinders, by the way, is out of all proportion the initial, post, of a car of moderate price. By the time one has paid for the labour involved in preparing the job, the fitting of new pistons, and the replacement of the parts, more than £15 has gone" on quite a small engine. The cost of the car originally may have been in the region of £160, so that £16 for one job is rather stiff.

Possibly Mr. Ford has in mind the replacement of complete engines at low cost. If so there will be an outery among those people who boast that the engine in their car was specially selected for them. It is astonishing how many special engines are on the road. I think salesmen are largely responsible for their existence.

Reconditioned Power Units.

I do not view the prospect of having the power unit exchanged for a reconditioned one with alarm. On the contrary, provided that the engines are really reconditioned properly, I would welcome being able to drop into a service station and have a now unit installed for n. few pounds.

Think of the saving in time-and- labour and the value of knowing that one has not had to lay up the car for weeks on end.

I recall the outery which follow ed the announcement that one could have reconditioned dynamos, bet tories, and electric starters supplied instead of waiting for repairs. Most people accept these service instruments now without a grumble.

Would Agents Object? ".

I am afraid the ordinary garage agent will kick if manufacturers follow the forecasted Ford plan. Thno and again I have been told by agente, when I complained of the difficulty of maintenance, that they did not want to make the work casier. What would become of them if one could nip off a mud- guard and, replace it within an hour or two?

I think that reasoning quite wrong. Make motor ownership easier and thousands more cars will be sold, Reduce the costs of repairs and adjustments, and more will be placed in the hands of garages.

I am not suggesting that it is possible for the agent to reduce costs as they are to-day. I merely point out that if they had more Work they would be able to spread their overlicuds over a larger" ifmm- ber of cars

Costs and Inefficiency. The fact remains that it--cars were made of smaller parts, each ona of which would be readily re- movable, thers would be fawor ramshackle cars on our roads." It ís fòb the slightest use blinking the fact that many people running in- [Dentinued an mast: Column)
