IMPORTANT CONFERENCE IN ROME
BRITISH MINISTERS SATISFIED WITH SATURDAY'S DISCUSSIONS
FRANCO-GERMAN DISTRUST MUST BE REMOVED
IF THERE IS TO BE PROGRESS IN EUROPE
TRROUGH REUTER'S ADENOT.)
ROME, March 10.
AFTER en audience of the King, followed by lunch at which Miss Ishbel MacDonald was also present, Mr. MacDonald and Sir J. Simon resumed their conversations with Sig. Mussolini in the afternoon until the time for an audience of the Pope at 6.30. Mr. MacDonald and Sir J.Simon declared they were well satisfied with yesterday's talks.
It is understood that the main theme of the talks at present is the possibility to attain a four-power consultative under standing, of which Britain and Italy will form the nuclues, to which France and Germany might join.
Treaty revision figures were prominent in the discussions as Sig Mussolini considers no progress can be made in Europe until this is achieved, the present mutual distrust between France and Ger. many removed and ex-enemy countries raised from their present state of inferiority.
Sig. Mussolini is emphatic that the revision must be by con sent and not by force, which is allayed to Mr. MacDonald's an- xiety on this polat.
