The Offcial Receiver: enquiries did you make from Mr. Steger about the financial hacking of the firm -I asked several friend and was told that the firm was well-known and to their knowledge was unancially sound. I asked Mr. Steger about the standing of the firm and he stated that everything was absolutely in the best condi- tion. I was shown a balance sheet for 1920.

Detective. Sergeant D. Fitches ap- peared for the prosecution, and the defendants were represented by Mr. C. Y. Kwan.

According to Sergeant Fitches, the first complainant, District Watchman No. 24, went to Tai Wo Stroot, Wanchai on the morning of March 10 as a result of informa tion received about an opium car- rior. While he was talking with the informer at the mouth of Tai Wo Street, the defendant came ont from a house and was pointed out by the infonuer as the wanted man. The complainant then went up to the defendant, and said he must search him, at the same time say. ing that he was a policeman, The defendant at first refused and ask ed the complainant what proof he ad to say that he was a police- man, whereupon the complainant: produced a card. The defendant then submitted to a search; and a parcel was found in a wide belt fastened round his waist. As the complainant was going to examing the parcel, however, he was struck in the chest by the defendant. At the same time the woman defendunt appeared on the scene, and struggled with the complainant apparently with a view to enabling the male defendant to excupe. The complain- ant then blew his whistle, whore- upon the first defendant took his opportunity and ran away,!
