INCREASE IN PROFITS DUE TO

SHANGHAI'S TROUBLES

The future of this Company, and I might add that of the Colony depends on a prosperous China. That we have in 1932 made money out of Shanghai's troubles is no cause for congratu....... lation, for inevitably the pendulum must swing the other way, and though I know there is a school of thought which thinks that China's sorrows make for Hong Kong's prosperity, surely this is a very shortsighted view," said the Hon. Mr. J. J. Paterson at the annual general meeting of the Hong Kong and Kowloon Wharf and Godown Company, Ltd., which was held at Messrs. Jardine, Matheson & Co.'s board room yesterday.

?

Mr. Paterson said that despite a considerable falling off in arrivals of local cargo, in: 1932, there had been an increase in profits over that of 1931, and he attributed the success to the Sino-Japan ese troubles in Shanghai.

Those present at the meeting were:-Hon. Mr. J. J. Paterson (Chairman),-Ho», Mr. C. G. Mackie Messrs.~~~Frank Austin, Allan Cameron, A. H. Compton, J. H. Jessen, Felix A. Joseph, H. H. H. Priestley and J. P. Warren (Directors), F. H. Crapnell (Secre tary), D. Mackenzie, G. B. S. Thomson, J. Hyde, F. J. Easter- brook, A. B. Raworth, H. Seth, J. Dalziel, A. Murdoch, J. M. Alves, J. T. CHAIRMAN'S SPEECH

In moving for the adoption of the roport and statement of accounts,

the Chairman said:-

Religion

A belief that a religious revival would set in throughout the Chris: tian world, influenced largely by the modern scientist's changed attitude to religion, was expressed by the Rev. W. Palton Rogers, Vicar of St. Andrew's Church, Kowloon, in an interview with a Daily Press repre- sentative yesterday:

Dealing with the problem of empty churches which has occupied so much attention-at-Home,Mr. Rogers said that he did not think the same problem existed in the East. The men and women who eame out from England had almost without exception been brought up in the Christian tradition, and even if they did prefer bathing and golf to going to church they were still Christians at heart. At Home con- ditions might be different, and if inc-dern youth was inclined to materialism it was usually because it had absorbed the scientific ideas which explained away" the Uni- verse by ignoring its spiritual values.

To-day, remarked the Vicar, a re- markable change had overcome scientific thought and a reaction had set in which led even the matéralista to reconsider their opinions. Scientists from Profesor Eddington to Dr. Jenne had revolu tionised the theories' of the ultimate nature of matter, and there was a tendency towards the recognition of some "force or "guiding prin- ciple behind the material uni- verse. As the philosopher, Bertrand Russell, had put it, scientists were galvanized iron godown erected in
