In an editorial under the strik ing caption of "A Life or Death Struggle" the China Times points out that the imminent class in Jehol will be different from all the previous conflicts between China and Japan since the present con troversy started, as in this case both sides have avowed their determinar tion to fight and are fully prepared for the struggle, Moreover, the League of Nations having definite ly pronounced judgment against Japan, any military action that Japan may take hereafter will be even more clearly & defiance against the whole warld Except for the omission of a formal declaration of war, the struggle in Johol will bo nothing but a full-fledged war, the journal declares.
Continuing, the paper points out that Japan's purpose in invading Jehol is really to obtain a base 'from which to launch further opera tiong for the conquest of the whole of China. It would be no exaggera, tion to say therefore that the loss of Jehol would affect not only North China but the entire coun- try.
The journal then goes on to make an eloquent appeal to the people to render material support to the Government forces resisting the in- vaders. It calls particularly upon the rich and well-to-do to give sub- stantially for the support of the defence forces.
China Must Help Herself. The Sin Wen Pao, in a leader" this morning, declares that despite the steady aggravation of the Man- churin, situation by the Japanese, it had, however, bean the hope of peace-loving China that the League would take drastic measures to check Japanese actions or that Japan would. herself realize the in- advisability of making China her inveterate enemy and would thus awake to her mistakes. From the latest developments, the journal continues, it seema certain that neither of these hopes can be realized, at least for the present, and that China must adopt mea- sures of self-defence.
However, as Japan's objective seems to be not merely Jchol but. Peiping, Tiontain and, in fact, the whole of China, the explosion in Jchol is likely to precipitate, or at least, lead to an international crisis of the first magnitude. As far as China is concerned, there is no alternative but to offer armed resistance against the invaders.
The journal insists that the en- tire nation must rise as one man to cope with the situation. Not only should they contribute their all to support the military forces, but their efforts must be so organised to assure the most effective results.
We must be prepared to suffer now, if we are to avert the impend- ing doom," the journal concludes.→→→ Kuo. Min.
