the Macon the gasbags will be of gelatin-latex proofed fabric. Other notable features are the internal engine-rooms, swivelling propellers, water-recovery apparatus, and the internal aeroplana hangar, The American airships are for naval use, not commercial as are the German ships.

The new Zeppelin now being built is to have 7,000,000 cubie fest of gas, and the gas chiefly used will be non-inflammable helium. To avoid valving this expensive gas there will be hydrogen gasbags ́in- side the helium, so that the hydro, gen can be valved to reduce lift.} This airship should be finished in the spring of 1834. There will be accommodation for fifty passenger (de against twenty in the Graf Zeppelin), and it is hoped that the cruising speed will be 80 m.p.b. The construction of the bull is on much the same lines as that of R 100.

The development of methods of "hooking on" by aeroplanes Kre of special interest. The Akron has a hangar which accommodates five single-seater aeroplanes. Squadron Leader Booth said that he had so tually witnessed over a hundred

landings" by aeroplanes on the Akron on one short fight without incident. The aeroplane hooks on to a trapeze bar lowered from the airship. Up to date some five_bun- dred landings have been made to the Akron by day and night, and mails to be iis customary for

New Mooring Device. The American navy have also de veloped a method of handling a large airship on the ground which has proved so successful that it is now possible to handle one of these large airships into a shed in cross wind of almost twenty miles an hour. A movable mooring tower en rails is used, and the bow of the airship is attached to this, while the stern is made fast to a transverse beam 186ft." long and weighing 00 tons, which also runa on rails. The apparatus is simple and effective. The movable tower is to be telescopic, and can ba ex- tended to a height of 160ft.

Two of the new giant birds, built by the Douglas Aircraft Company of Santa Monics, are now in ser- vice. They are known

as "Gull wing planes, or high-wing mono- planes, all metal and with two outboard motors suspended from the wings.

The new bomber practically makes the present" Keystone and Condor bombers obsolete for actual emergency use, although they serve adequately as training ships. Neither can approach at top speed, the 140-mile minimum of the new Douglas

Pursuit planes, mostly of Bocing construction, have a speed of ap proximately 100 miles an hour. The new bomber also makes mandatory speeding up of the pursuit planes which under the generel plan of air defense and attack, must. be faster than the bomber if it is to protect the larger craft while bombs are dropped.

Speedier pursuit craft are now being turned out by Boeing.
