петь,

The Government has, however, the right to expect, the Chancellor declared, that the press acknow- ledges the good will and beat inten- |tions of the men at present at the helm of the ship of state and that its criticism should at least be freed from all personal insults.

He could see many possibilities of what might be called a negative majority in Germany, but the only positive majority he could find was the present one.

Moanyhile the forthcoming elec tions have already resulted in a further readjustment of the political partics. Thus, the State. Party, previously known as the Democrats, has decided to contest its seats in- dependently, but to link up its "reservoir list with that of the Social-democrats, without, however, in any way identifying ita political views with those of that party.

On the Right too offorts are being made aiming at consolidation "and" reconciliation, Herr von

Papen trying hard to win over for the sup- port of the Government the smaller bourgeois parties, which he is trying to persuade to combine with the National People's Party for an electoral coalition comprising all groups between the National So- cialists and tho Clerical Center Party. Those efforts are arousing much comment in political circles and ars generally regarded as har ing good chances.for success.

The Chancellor's Salary,

The Chancellor's announcement that he would forego bis salary had a strange sequel to-day as doubts have arisen whether he as civil- servhat was entitled to do so. On account of the, dubiety of the legal
