Government Troops Failed. Several expeditions have been sent to put an end to this reign of terror, and all have failed. The only result has been to improve the "Red" forces by furnishing them with arms, and ammunitions.

The Political Situation.

Paris, Feb. 6. The position of the Daladier Cabinet has been rendered extremely precarious by the decision of the executive com- mittee of the Socialist Party not to join the Government but to make its support contingent upon a radi cal policy failing which the par. liamentary Socialist party will vote against the Government.

In these circumstances the press believes that the new Government will be defeated in the Chamber unless the middle parties come to | ita rescue in the event of the So- cialists' going over to the opposi tion in a critical division. How ever, it is considered extremely un- likely that thie support will come forth for the present Cabinet.

The Atlantiqua Fire, Paris, Feb. A sensational statement.regarding the origin of the fire which destroyed the-liner Atlantique was made to-day by the Minister of the Merchant Marine who declared that the blaze was apparently due to sabotage and that he had already appointed a special commission to investigate the affair. The original theory that the fire was caused by short- circuit could, the Minister added, no longer be maintained,

The press generally welcomes this statement and indicates that this will allay the apprehensions of the travelling public regarding the anfety of travel on French ships and voices the hope that the in- quiries will be speedily completed and its results be published with all possible details.

At to-day's afternoon session the chairman of the Disarmament Conference Mr. Arthur Henderson spoke a few words in memory of the deceased and as an expression of mourning adjourned the session for fifteen minutes.

The late Count Apponyi became a deputy of the Hungarian Diet in 1672, first as member of the Con servative government party, later however joining the Independence Party which demanded full free-. dom of the country except for the union with Austria in the person of the Emperor and King. When only 32 years old, Count Apponyi who was one of Hungary's most powerful orators, became the leader of the now combined opposition groups, the so-called - National Party, and in several Cabinets held ministerial posts.
