London, Jan. 26-The loss of so important a vessel as the French liner L'Atlantique, which pow lies at Cherbourg a "constructive total loss," could not fail to have "some effect on the marine insurance mar ket, and one development arising out of the disaster was to bring into the market considerable volume of reinsurance on other im portant and highly valued vessels. The bulk of this business has been with regard to foreign ships, par- ticularly French liners, though the biggest and best German and Ita lian ships have been the subject of reinsurance, as have also some of the best-known British Transat- lantic liners.
Rates substantially in excess of those paid on the original policy have been current, and on the giant French liner Normandie, now fit- ting out at 8t. Nazaire, up to £3 per cent. has been paid for reinsur- arce against fire, although the ori ginal rate from the inception of the policy in 1931 is only 52a ed par cent, It has been suggested that this business is the result of panic, but that is unlikely. It is far more probable, that is it evidence that underwriters with substantial liabi- fities are avoiding any possibility of two heavy claims on one under. writing account.
