The second event is a hurdles race over a mile and a quarter. This will provide an interesting tusale between Festival Eve and Cloudy Eve. The latter has proved a clover hurdler and is sure to give Miss Fearon's candidate a close race. Britannic Hall ought to get the third place.
The flat race over six furlongs has drawn, only eight entries and the race is very open. Imperial Hall ought to win as he ran quite well at Macao Much Ado and The Quail are likely to collect place money.
In the half mile dash which close brings the programme to a White Label stands a good chance of carrying it off. Esculado and Pat ran very well the last time out and Boston might create a surprise.-

Shield Competition' Commences
SUNDAY'S ATTRACTION
Owing to the senior and Junior Shield competition starting this afternoon, there will be no League matches in the First and Second divisions but in the Third five mat ches will be decided
The results of the shield matches are very difficult to forecast as these games are played under somewhat different rules from those of the League. Players who have been matches are eligible to play figuring in the First Division league in either Senior or Junior Shield matches, and consequently the form of the tears is hard to judge.

The biggest attraction, however, will be on Sunday when the twn Britol R.. Chinese rivals, South China and Clapton Chinese Athletic will meet at Caro Crystal P. lino Hill. This match, which is a Luton League fixture, should be full of Newport thrills, and no doubt a large crowd Queen's P.R.. will turn up to see it. The Chinese Athletic are somewhat handicapped by the absence of several of their regular players in Shanghai, and owing to this the odds are alight ly against them."
The following are the matches
Hazell and Williains made their debut into the Open Doubles, and Club opposed to Howard and Abbas Navy
won in straight sets, as expected. Probably not taking the opposition seriously, the pair did not play up well, and will have to produce a marked improvement in form, it they are to win their way to the semi-final, for which their pros pects seem bright.
To the third match of the day, Chan So and Ho Wai Hing did well in disposing of Stocker and Waring. The winners now meet Hazell and Williams.
Ho Ka Lau, one of the most experienced hands in the tourna ment, did not meet with much opposition against Tai Yan Pai, The latter while showing all round. improvement on his last year's form, and also a better idea' tactics, was out-generalled by Ho, whose plans for attack obviously upset his opponent. Young Taui is capable of development, and with more experience should do botr
in future. 12
In the Club Championship, Capt. Cannon survived the first round by beating Owen Hughes who snatch- ed the opening set Three other matches were also decided.
