This "at- tack" forms parts of the army aud navy combined manoeuvres which officially begin to day.
Ten thousand troops on Friday marched out of Schofield barracks and now lie hidden in clumps of trees, ravines and other points of vantage which also shelter huge field-guns. These guns, which trae tors have dragged into positions, are securely hidden and skilfully camouflaged that they are, invisible at a distance of a few yards.

Mrs. Southorn's Address. Mrs. W. T. Southern, who opened the Exhibition, said that she had felt greatly honoured when Dr. Hahn bad asked her to do so. People in Europe were apt to think that we in Hong Kong were entirely cut off from the world of art, music and literature, but this was not true we did have opportunities each year of hearing some good music and reading good books. It was not often however that we had the op: portunity which we had today of seeing really good painting or sculpture.
She hoped that Hong Kong would give these distinguished. German artists a really warm welcome so that they might be persuaded to stay here for a while and make their permanent and lovely records of the kleidoscopic life of the Colony,
Soon after receiving the money, the defendant and another man went to the office of Messra, George K. Hall Brutton and Co. and there consulted Mr. Strellest on the ques tion of purchasing the Cathay News. A fee of $6.00 was charged by Mr. Strellett for this advice. and a receipt for that sum was handed to the defendant.
Story of a Deposit. Nothing happened until after the return of the complainant from Manila ou about the 14th of Octo- ber last year. In an interview, the defendant told the complainant that the purchase of the Cathay News did not materialise, and that it was no use buying a paper which was about to go into bankruptcy. De fendant then suggested starting a new paper called the China Digest. Complainant agreed, but asked him about the 82,125 which he had entrusted him for the purpose of buying the Cathay News. The de- fendant was then alleged to have told complainant that in connec tion with the starting of the China Digest a sum of 83,000 had to be desposited with the Colonial Se- cretary, and that 81,500 from the sum of 82,125 had already been de posited through Messrs.
