BEAUTY SPECIALISTS IN COURT

MRS. BETEN'S ACTION FOR SLANDER

$200 DAMAGES AWARDED AGAINST MADAME JUILA SAYER

Judgment for the plaintif with $200 damages and coats was awarded to Madame Beten, ladies hairdresser and beauty culturist, Pho took an action, for slander against Madame Julia Bayer, trad- ing as the Juliette Beauty Parlour at Ho Tung Mansions, Hankow. Road, Kowloon,

Mr. F. G. E. Bendall appeared for the plaintif and Mr. D. L Strellett for the defence.

The alleged 'slender complained of was as follows in

"Mrs. Beten is only Chinese and not at all good. She does not know how to work as she has never learnt. She has no diploms and it was her amah who taught her how to do per manent waving. Besides, he is not clean and does not sterlise her things; that is why she burned a lady's head and gave her an awful skin disease so that the poor lady was laid up in hon- pital for over a month. This lady's husband has the case in the hands of a lawyer now, so you will see."

ני

These words were alleged to have been uttered to Mrs. Lysaught and to Miss Mary Chan..

'COMMON GOSSIP IN HONG KONG'

Mr. Rendall in the course of his opening said that some time in June last, a Mrs. Major had a permanent wave. In September sores developed on her head. They were the ordinary sores which ap pear on children's heads and her hair, as a result, commenced to fall out

Mr. Rendall went on to say that although Messrs. Deacons wrote to

Mrs. Beten by Mrs. Beten, "no proceedings were Mrs. Major and it seemed obvious that there was no cause for action," "After that," said Mr. Hendall, Kit was common gossip throughout Hong Kong that this disease had been communicated to Mrs. Major by Mrs. Beten, and it was the in tention of Mrs. Baten to commence proceedings against that particular lady. But no proceedings were commenced because of the unwil, lingness of witnesses to come for ward. That is always the difficulty with slander actions."

The defence, said Mr. Rendall, was a denial, and that Mrs. Ly sanght and Miss Chan were agents and induced the defendant to say what she was alleged to have said. Plaintif bad not come to the court to make money out of the case, bút only to clear her reputation.

"

Mrs. Beten, in evidence, stated that her business had gone down by 60 per cent. since September
