AUSTRALIA FACED WITH COLOSSAL

TASK

VICTORY FOR ENGLAND PRACTICALLY A CERTAINTY

FINGLETON BOWLED BY LARWOOD FOR

NO RUNS

[THROUGH REUTER'S AGENCY)

ADELAIDE, Jamiary 18.

LARWOOD adapted his off-theory, when he opened the bowl ing with Alien against the Australians in their second innings. After three runs had been stored, Fingleton was bowled by Lar wood, when he attempted to turn one from him-3. for. 1. After nine runs had been added to the score Ponsford attempted to cat the first bail of Larwood's fourth over and was splendidly taken by Jardine at backward point-12 for 2. Bradman batted splen didly for seventy-three minutes, showing a masterly all-round dis play and in whelk time he scored 66 runs which included ten fours and one six. Verity was severely punished by him, but was itially caught and bowled by the same bowler 100 for 3.

McCabe feil a victim to Allen after scoring 7 runs, when he was caught by Leyland near the the boundary-116 for 4

Larwood was cheered early in the afternoon' when be assumed the off-theory, but was booed when he restored to the leg-theory in his seventh over,

Woodfull played a stolid innings having scored 36 runs not out at the close of play, while Richardson, his partner, had not broken his ** duck."

ENGLAND LEAD BY 411 WITH FOUR

AUSTRALIANS OUT

There were 20,000 present when! play was resumed this morning ip unsettled weather. Rain fell in the early morning, but it left the pitch unaffected, though it is bound to leave its impression as the game continues.

Jardine kept Paynter in reserve and sent out Verity with Ames"(18) to resume the English inning:

Bradman completed his over, after having claimed Hammond's wicket with the first ball of the last over of yesterday's play, and Wall and O'Reilly were again thrown into the attack, but they could not hinder the third hundred from be- ing hoisted after 431 minutes' bat-! ting.

Grimmett was then given a tara with the ball, but he was unable to tempt Verity with well-pitched up deliveries, and the partnership re- alised 50 runs in 64 minutes and the 360 was signalled after 492 minutes batting.

Double Bowling Change. - Woodfull made a double change at 255, Bradman and Grimmett be- ing, again given an opportunity. This was the signal to open out on the part of Ames and Verity, the former hitting Bradman through the covers to the boundary to reach hia 50 after 149 minutes. Verity played a dogged innings, very fine. leg shots being the feature of his knock, and the pair were together at the luncheon interval with the score at 385 for 6, having-put on 80 runs in an invaluable partner- ship. Ames was 64 and Verity 36 at lunch.

Hard Task for Australis, At the luncheon interval England were 504 runs in the lead with four wickets to fall, and Australia will have to break all fourth innings re- cords for the Adelaide ground if they are to force a victory.

Ames added only one run after lunch, being bowled by O'Reilly. with a "anorter" on the off stump 314-7.60. He and Verity bad added 98 runs for the seventh wicket in 110 minutes. He hit six boundar iss in an innings which lasted 189

minutes,

Verity left at 305, getting his leg in front of one from O'Reilly after scoring 40, in 115 minutes.

A

Larwood was caught in the long feld at 403, and Voce was bowled by O'Reilly at 419. Paynter WAL forced to have a runner as he limp- ed badly after hitting each ball.
