He estimated that there would be over 120 'buses in service when the contract was under way and thought that there would be no change in the present type of vehicles for some time. This again depended on the decision of the Government as to the use of double-deckers. The

type of vehicle would probably con tinue to be the popular Leyland and Thornycroft chassis, which are now in use on the road. Experi- menta are being undertaken with Diesel motors and it is possible that this type of engine will see service in the Company before long ROUND THE NEW TER.

RATES THE SAME?

On the delicate subject of farea and rates, Mr. Louey was very reticent, but remarked that he thought there was no reason why the present rates could not remain. There would, however, be a change in the section rates as at present in uno, but to exactly what extent, ho could not say at the moment.

Mr. Louey in conclusion remark; ed that there was considerable room for expansion and progress in the automobile passenger service on the mainland of the Colony, and that the Company would devote their entire resources and experience in giving the public the satisfaction which they have maintained. throughout as the pioneer bus ser- vice of the colony.

THE PIONEER 'BUS SERVICE

RITORY SERVICE? Questioned as to the New Terri tory service, Mr. Louey remarked that a very efficient service will be organised for the New Territory, The present Castle Peak-Un Long service will be extended as far as Taipo. The complete.circuit was in mind and would possibly prove very popular, but the condition of the Shatin and Reservoir, ronds were not considered fit for passenger vehicles se. yet by the Government. However, the Company was ready to tackle the difficult climb which pany is the pioneer Bus service of commence from Shantio and will operate a service just as soon as Government permission is available The present type of bos in service between Unlong, Fanling and Sheungshui will be replaced by fast and counfortable, buses.

RECORD LIAR SENTENCED

Two Years' Hard Labour For. Kidnapping

THE AMERICAN WAR DEUTS (To the Editor of the Spectator,] Sir,-In view of the critical posi- tion of the War Debts controversy, will you allow me to quote, for the homofit of American commentators, some words which I wrote long ago on the subject and which go to the root of the matter i

If America had had an army in April, 1917, when she nominally came into the World War, a large part of the American munitions and stores which now figure as 'debt would have been fired off or consumed by Amerionn troops. SHOULD NOT MIND BEING Because America had no soldiers,

This argument has since been developed with great force by s French writer of wote.

There is another utterance I like to recall in this connection-the words spoken by Mr. Hoover on February 1, 1917, just before. America declared war:

America will be rich, prosper- us and wealthy as the result of this War We shall have made untold millions of this wealth out of the woe and swelter of Europe. The money which has come to us from theis people is money in trust; and unless America recognizes this trust she will pay dearly, and bit

erly for its possession.
