ENGLAND OPEN WELL IN SECOND INNINGS

JARDINE AND WYATT PLAY AGGRESSIVE CRICKET

AUSTRALIA DISMISSED FOR TWO HUNDRED AND TWENTY-TWO

[THHOLO] REUYER'S AGENCY)

ADELAIDE, January 16. WALL and O'Reilly opened the bowling before 32,000 spectators

in England's second innings in the third Test match, Richardson is keeping wicket as Oldfeld is indisposed and Australia's twelfth man, O'Brien, is fielding.

Satcliffe met with carly disaster when he hooked a ball from Wall to be caught by O'Brien at square-leg by a brilliant over-

wicket. head catch, when he had scored 7 runs-7 for one.

Jardine and Wyatt played out time. The former having scored 24 and Wyatt 47 at the close of play.

GREAT "COME BACK" BY PONSFORD

ADELAIDE, Jan.16

ONE of Australia's greatest bats

men, W. H: Ponsford re-estab-' lighed himself today by saving Australia from a first innings cal-{ lapse.

V. Y. Richardson helped the Vic torian to add 80 runs in a critical! fifth-wicket partnership. Ponsford continued his mastery over the Eng lish shock attack," and gave a magnificant display.

His recovery of his batting form, similar to that of Don Bradman, delighted the spectators, Ponsford, for the first time in his cricketing carost, was dropped from the se cond Test, but his answer to the selectors has fully recovered his former. prestige.

There were 20,000 present when Ponsford (45) and Richardson (21) resumed the Australian innings at 100 for 4 on a perfect wicket and in sunny weather.

Voce had his ankle bandaged and gave way to Allen, who opened with Larwood. The Notts bowler, how- ever, fielded.".

Larwood again exploited his leg theory, and again incurred: the wrath of the crowd when be hit Ponsford on the back three times. The Victorian, however, reach his Su after 122 minutes' batting.

Ponsford played superb cricket, powerful cutting yielding him five' boundaries. He forced Jardine to pack the offside with a ring of fielders,

Allen's Buccoes..

At 131 Allen changed ends and met with immediate • success, Richardson playing Lis second ball on to his wicket 131-5-25.

Richardson had batted for os minutes, showing amazing restraint and hitting only one boundary in a fifth wicket partnership which yielded 80-runs,

Jardine mada frequent changes, but he could not separate Pons ford and Oldfield, who wore toge- ther at lunch with the score at 185 for 5, Ponsford being 60 and the wicket-keeper 26.

Ponsford's glorious innings came to a close at 194 when he attempted

POPE DECLARES HOLY YEAR

PAPAL BULL READ TO HUGE CROWD

(THROUGH REUTER'S AGENCY. I

Howe, Jan, 18.---- THE Papel Bull, promulgating the Holy Year, was read to a huge crowd from the portico of St. Peter's this morning

The Bull details the celebrations to be held and announces that in- dulgences in conpection with the Holy Year are only to be available in Rome

His Holiness the Pope urges the faithful to undertake pilgrimages® to Rome and to Palestine,

The ceremony before the reading of the Bull was most impressive. The Pope was seated in the Throne Room arrounded by prelates and picturesquely uniformed chamber-

The Pope presented the Bull to the Dead of the Apostolic Protono- tarios. After His Holincas had retired, the prelates filed out in procession to the portion, where the Dean of the Protonotaries read the Bull from a specially erected pul- pits

Three copies of the Bull were then handed to the Master of Ore monies to be read at the Church'af St. Lateran Santa Maria Mag giore, and St. Paul's, outside the walls?

These three churches contain a Holy Door, which is cly opened in Holy Years, at other times being kept walled up with specially donated bricks.

The Pope himself presides at the oftning of the Holy Door at St. Peter upon which he knocks with golden hammer demanding ad- mission

Consenting to the publication of the Bull the Topa said that in the Old Testament the origin of the Jubilée Year was a year of peace and remission and pacification,
