The Devil's Bridge is one of the finest structures of its kind in the country. It spans the Lane, in a setting of river and moor and mountain, in three bold arches. It is supposed to be of monastic origin, but precisely how old it is not known. There is an inscrip tion on the bridge: Fear God; Honor the King, 1673"-but it was an old bridge when that was carv- ed.. Local words dated 1584 refer to it as an old bridge, so its age is computed at not less than 500 years.
