ROUND THE TOWN
Sales Wisdom For Hong Kong Women
"Round the town" this week] means to most women round, the sales," and so tempting are the bargains that it will be no surprisa if there are a good; many very empty, purses by the end of the month. Perhaps a fow domestic The wise woman will counter this by taking the opportu- nity of getting in some particularly nie groceries from Lane, Craw ford's at bargain pricess, the old saying "feed the brute" is worth remembering when ones conscience is burdened by the thought of those two or three extra hats the frock, and adorable short costee, those evening shoes and the divine neek- Ince, that it would really have been too heart reading to pass by!
There really is not much to tell you about the shops this week, I've been far too busy getting bargainë myself to consider much else. be sides, but I did notice a few things.
Whiteaway's have some wonder ful bargains in eretonnes not only by the yard but in really sheisfac tory lengths of 5, 10, 12 and 15 yards which would be enough to recover a chair or two or a settee. Bath towels are cheap and there are good bargains in table linen. I found that there are big reductions inthithen's underwear and shoes for men, women and children are offered at bargain prices.
Laza, Crawford's have burgnius; in every departament, Woolies, that is two-piece kuitted suits, sweaters, cardigans, etc., are much marked down. I always get shoes and stockings in Lane, Crawford's sale and store them, it's a real economy, Very well worth looking at are a number of woollen frocks some of which have an accompanying coat. These may not appear to be sen sational bargains though they are "aale priced," but you would be wise to invest in one at least as they are new season's stock and just what you will be needing, in a few weeks time. Even a couplo of dollars off something you really need is better economy than; tem, dollars off something for which you really have no use."Silk frocks and two-piece Buits should be looked at too, you'll need these in the spring.
Very smart is this wall cut little frock in a warm brown coloured tweed, a colour 'hálf' way, between sakan and nigger. The gloves, ik nook are of emerald greep zulada,!" Lans, Crawford's have foun, most at tractive frocks in these light weight micdern swede
WAISTLINES AND SLEEVES
FASHIONS PAMPERED DARLINGS
No reasonable person with a re suine of current evening dresses in her mind can pretend that ladies who acquire weight easily can afford to continuo such acquisition and expect to wear their new clothes well.
Your true designer is an artish and deals with the ideal frat, al though, for practical reasons, be or she may later be forced to add the i other art of compromise to the original conception.
It is for this reason that at the beginning of both the spring and the autumn reason there is nearly always an outcry about the unwear ableness of the new clothes,
Unthinkable,
They are shown on lovely and slender mannequins, probably in I "charming" setting, and to the ordin. - [ary or untrained cfe, the dress thai looks so, exquialte on perfect pro portions as unthinkable on propor tions that are, well-shall we say less restrained t
If a line is really good, however, even if it is startingly differen: from those to which our eyes havo become accustomed, it is capable of being applied to types, sizes and heights which are very widely at variance with one another. If it is not, it is natural that the more difficult the proportions of the wearer the more unsatisfactory the dress will be,

The earlier collections gave two or three outstanding features for
overing frocks
One wae the use of two or sote-- timed three contrasting colours, In some cases it has been a matter of | uning very long scarves which be gan at the shoulders -ewathed the waist and fell to the hem of the dress. In others, both the bodice and the skirt have had panelt, usually asymmetrical, at a contrast- ing colour and which were actually let in to the dress...
This kind of thing has been de yeloped in a very interesting man ner in one or two recent models:
except for a band of vivid blue which begins as a narrow edging to the single shoulder strap in front, and widens as it curves under the arm and follows the skirt down to its hem at the back.
Slender Hips.
The full-topped sleeves which wel have learnt to accept on winter
Dolly Vardon's sale goes on merrily. Besides about 200 hats all woll marked down, there are some excellent bargains in woollen suits. Some of them are nearly half price, and they are all so well cut and in the tailored style that does not date, that they are well worth get- ting with a view, to little wear this spring and then the tin lined box till next anturm,
And Gordon's Well, you will have to be very firm minded with yourselt if you go in here and don't come out with at least half a dozen pira of shoes. There are day and evening shoes from $5.00. Some of them are small or very big, Bize but by no means the majority. "Gordon's shoos are nice,” is the expressed opinion of every 'woman, I know who wears them-and when you can get these specially nice shoes at such ridiculously Jow prices well, why not?
Now, don't forget to look at Dolly Vardon's hats and suits, Lane, Crawford's stockings and tweed frocks, Whiteaway's household linen and cretonnes, and if you have kiddies, children's warta undies, and Gordon's shoes; if you do, I am sure that when the day of reckon ing comes you will be able to say "I have spent wisely at the sales this year."
