DICTATION

(TO THE EDITOR OF THE HONG KONG DAILY FRESS."]

DEAR SIR, The Local Junior Civil Service Examination begin on the 9th instant at Queen's Cof lege with a piece of dictation, The manner under which, the dictation examination was conducted, could I think find no precrilent else where. The writer's view is shared by many experienced educational iste.

Altogether there were about four hundred candidates sitting for the examination," and they were aasom- bled in the great hall of the Col- leze to be examined at the same time only by one man, whose volco was nothing but of the ordinary, and who, during, the whole time, stood" on the far-end platform shouting to the huge crowd with- rut any assistance whatsoever in bis work, he being the sole examiner in the big hall.

Only the fortunate minority of the competitors, who sat near the examiner, could hear him clearly. Very many candidates complained litterly. I am inclined to think that the Colonial Secretary will have sympathy with these young people. Yours faithfully,
