INFORMAL AND ENJOYABLE AFFAIR

St. George's Ball, at the Feninsula Hotel last night, proved an enjoyable as any of the previous functions of its kind, although the affair was run on much more informal imes than usual, The decorations, arranged by Mr. W. A. Comell, with characteristic artistry, were there, St. George and Merry England," being blazed across the front of the Hotel, and in the Oval and Rose, Boome, the roses of England were displayed amid flags and buat- ing, and shields bearing the arms of England's towns and counties.

Many yarns were span, within these his toric walls, though we did not hear them lift the smoke grimed rafters with The Poachers Boog," "The Farmer's Boy," or "Hearta, of Oak" as in the village Inns at Home!

The supper room was on the first four, and directly, behind the Pre- sidant's chair was another picture of St. George, flanked by the Union |_Jack and the two banners of Eng land's Patron Saint. A splendid replica of the Houses of Parlia ment, done in sugar, was also on view.

There were no speeches this year and supper was an informal affair, The buffet was opened by the Presi- dent, with Sir William and Lady Peel as his principal guests, after Dance No. 9, but the remainder of the dancers drifted in as they pleased, the men foraging for themselves, and their ladies, at tables set out with all the cold delicacies that the ingenuity, of Mr. A. G. Piovanelli, the Peninsula's popular manager, and his capable staff could provide. The service was good and the commissariat,' proved a great success,
