OPERATION ON MAN'S BRAIN
SURGICAL TRIUMPH IN
LONDON
(Special Air-Mail Servicey
LONDON, Dec. 19.
Cae of the most delicate surgica! operations over attempted has been successfully performed at the Lon- don Hospital. The patient, a school teacher, was admitted to the hos- pital with a tumour at a particu- larly inaccessible part of the brain He was going blind, and it. was feared that eventually the tumour would have spread to other parts of the brain. Now, as the result of a marvellous operation, on which a great eye specialist and other doctors were engaged for hours, the tumour has been ranoved and the patient's sight has been restored.
An official at the hospital said: It was one of the most complicated operations, needing the constant at- tention of a team of five doctors, and is the result of a new technique and the great progress which has been made in brain surgery,
Prior to the discovery of this technique, to have attempted to operate on the man's brain would have i robally ended fatally. The operation was started in the mor- ing, and by means of diathermie current the tissues of the brain were completely broken through to get to the tumour. --
The great danger was hemorrhage - trouble which prevented advanco in brain surgery years ago-and prevent great care was taken to this.By the new technique the dia- thermic current gradually went through the colla, breaking them; but heading them again, as it pass ed on its way to the base of the trouble.
Before the oneration started the patient's blond had been tested and cast in one of the four groups, so that, in the event of a transfusion becoming necessary somebody in the same blood group was at hand to give blood.

BRITISH RECORD IN DANGER
(Special. Afr-Mail Service)
LONDON, December 14. The world speed record, of 497) m.p.h set up by Flight-Laut. G., Stainforth last year, is in danger far, within the past few days, an Italiani waplane, flying at Lake Garda, attained a spoed of 720 kilometros (450 miles) per hour over one lap of the speed-record course,
This speed was attained on at least two occasions and was duly recorded by the photographic method, although not officially ob- served for record purposes. order to be accepted as a new re- cord the 5-kilometre course has to be flown twico in each direction and the average taken.
In
It remains to be seen whether this can be done, and, whether the en gines will sustain the ordeal. The machine is a Macchi monoplane, with two Fiat engines placed back to back, and driving two air screws close together, and revolving in op posite directions on the same sta- Lional axis. The aggregate power is about 5,500 b.p. Italy has made, and is making, great sacrifices in her resolve to win the record.
THE BIRTH OF BROAD- CASTING
LONDON, December 12.
It is not generally known that the real beginning of broadcasting was due in no small measure to the amateur wireless "experimenter in this country. Two of the pioneers in this movement were Mr. Leslie M'Michael and Mr. R. H. Klein, both well-known figures to-day. în {* the wireless industry.
