VOLUME OF IDLE TONNAGE IN SUMMER

POLITICAL SITUATION IN MANCHURIA

DEPRESSES LOCAL MARKET

The period under review in the Coastal shipping and the chartering business has been the worst on re cord for many years and at one time during the year-May, June, July, things were very dead, there being practically no demand for tonage. At the time of writing, quito good den of tonnage is lying idle and freight rates are exceptionally low,. Quite a number of steamers are being operated at a dead loss.

Towards the end of the month, Saigon millers had to discontinue operating their time-chartered steamers and two British stomers still on hire had to lie idle in the Harbour.

The political situation in the Far East, not having been settled dur ing the year, inter-Coastal trade in Parcels of beans from Dalny to this part of the world has been Canton were shipped at 47 cents seriously effected. REPORT BY DOGAL MANAGER

JAPAN'S STRENUOUS. EBFORT IN 1948.

The following review of the year's business has been supplied to the Daily Press by the local manager of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha.

"The curtain of an eventful 1002 has been rung down with the sensational events of the War Debt Problem and Geneva Conferences, wherein are our Sino-Japanese dis pute and Disarmament question, being still left unsettled.

However, it is gatifying for us that, despite the worldwide trade depinasion, coupled with the Chin- ese anti-Japanese boycott bitterly Aimed at Japan's trade, Japan made an unusually big starde in her export trade during 1939. This is, of course, chiefly due to the low price of commodities, benefited by an exchange in favour of her ex- port trade; but the fact must not be overlooked that there were na tion-wide strenuous efforts to re- tain her trade, or rather to gain much more business elsewhere than what she lost in China; and such efforts have been so successful that the total exports from Japan dur ing 1092 reached approximately. 1,400 million yens, exceeding by 200 million yens the figures of the previous year. Furthermore, her import trade thoughout the same year, has also remarkably increas ed. In consequence thereof, the shipping trades throughout the country have also revealed a happy out turn, showing an increase in their total revenue of 60. million

thus the N.Y.K. and the 0.8.K. both gained, of course through Jens over the previous year; and

War Risks.

The Chinese New Year during February continued to impede the progress of chartering. Practically. no business was. transacted in the first half of February. The political crisis in Shanghai also created a situation which caused great anxiety to ship owners as well as time charterers, Rice, benn and coal merchants, having Chinese steamers under trip or time charter were compelled to insure their cargnes against War Risks, while those who had already taken foreign steamers on timecharter tried to divert them in other trades instead of keeping them employed in troublesoma waters, Several British and Nor wogian steamers under six months timecharter to Northern Chinose were offered in the market for sub- charter.

There was no demand for tonnage on trips from Bangkok to Hong ong, but medium sized prompt steamers were still able to secure cargoes from Rangoon to Hong Kong, Amoy and Swatow at Rupees 8 and 10 per ton respectively....

From Dalny to Canton, the fix titres of two Chinese steamers for small parcels of beans were reported at 45 Dalny centa per picul.

STRAITS LABOUR AND COLONY'S SHIPPING

In June, there was a slight rise in the berth rate from Enigon to Hongkong, freights touching 10 to 20 conts per pacul and this was fol owed by a spell of activity in trip chartering for Saigon-Hongkong. The Manager of a leading Bri Three China Navigation steamers tish shipping Company in commen were fixed at 30 cents per pical forting upon the year's business stated prompt loading and this had the that while the year just closing can effect of deadening the market unly be termed a poor one once again,

shipping as a whole, this Colony has shown some slight improvement as regards both imports and ex- ports from Europe with however, a heavy falling off in its trade with Japan, exports to Straits ports and imports from India.

During this month, several steam. er under time-charter to Saigon rice millers were redelivered to owners 10 days before the expira tion of their charters, In one in stance owners, taking advantage of the propitous moment in Saigon/ Hong Kong berth rates, managed to induce Saigon rice merchants to extend the time-charter of a 3,200 tonner with a Hongkong Govern- ment Passenger License for a period of two months at 810,130 per month. This businces, although appealing to be highly unremunera tive was nevertheless the best ob tainable in the market.
