There are also some who see in the expected influx of Russian pro duste a very substantial aid to wards the holding out in the coun- try of the boycott against Japan. It is to be noted that the country imports many things she does not produce. When these cannot come from Japan, they have to come from other countries, and hitherto, goods from other countries cost much more than those from Japan. It is because of this that despite the heavy punishments that are being meted out se shown in recent Can- ton incidents, many. would yet engage in the "amuggling" of Japanese goods. The arrival of Russian products is than expected as a solution to the problem, for these may even be cheaper than Japanese goods, and their appear- ance on the market is therefore to be welcomed..

SOVIET PRODUCTS?¬ But there is, however, surely something wrong with certain piece goods stores in Canton which label some of their goods "Products of Soviet Russia. The action is evidently an advertising stunt cal- culated to capture the prevailing friendly sentiment that the public have been entertaining towards Russia but the effort is very poor. As some one has wittingly pointed out through the Press, no diploms tic relations have for years existed between Soviet Russia and Chins, hence there has been no trade in- tercourse. No Russian goods wore thus known to have existed on the local market. Even presuming that enterprising merchants in that country immediately took steps.to despatch goods to China as soon as news of the reconciliation was known, such consignments cannot as yet have reached "Canton,

DEPRESSION IN SILK INDUSTRY

Owing to the recent depression in the silk industry, in the Shun- tak district, about 3,000 women engaged in the industry are said to have been thrown out of em- ployment. Many of them have come out to Canton city to seek work aa household servants. The number. of these young women from the district seeking work in Canton bas grown so large that the Shun- tak Association in Canton is alarma ed and is looking for measures for their relief. As many of these women are married but in pure- ance of a very undesirable local custom, do not stay in their hus bands' houses, efforts are made to persuade them to do so? Others are requested to return to the district and measures are to be devised to revive the silk industry. Of those who would remain in Canton-to wait for employment, an employ- ment register is being kept and steps taken to prevent them from rouges and women raffickers,
