The size of this undertaking was so stupendous that it staggers the mind. It is only when one realizes that the amount of earth moved and piled up in the form of dykes for a distance of over three thou- sand miles would build a dyke, three feet high and three feet wide, that would circle the earth four times at the Equator that one gets a faint understanding of what has been done.

Those of us who are fortunate anough to be on this tour of in- spection of the Yangtze River Dykes can testify to the quality. of work, the fine uniformity, the orderliness of the work, which spells a high degree of engineer- ing skill and great discipline in the organization of millions of workers.

Not; the least of this great pisco of work is the constructive phase of the whole effort, for.it has re- moved the dreaded fear of a re- currence of similar floods from the hearts of the Chinese people.

Some Anomalies.

It is emphasised by the fact that a Dutch company has recently placed some of its ships under the, British flag to ensure lower ope rating costs. An anomaly of a more domestic kind 8 that, owing to recent reductions in wagen; the pay of junior officers is now lower then that of bosuns, carpenters and donkeymen, even without taking overtime into sccount.
