SINO-JAPANESE DISPUTE SHELVED FOR A WEEK

(THROUGH REUTER'S AGENCY.]

GENEVA, Nov. 22.

A LULL Jus pów settled down upon Geneva, the Sino-Japan- osc dispute having been shelved for

weck.

The Manchurias, quarrel will not crop up again until next Tuesday when the debate on the Lytton Report will begin. in the Assembly.

It is being strongly urged that American and Soviet Aupport should be secured at this stage and it is believed that America, il sutis- fied with the affirmations in the. debate, will not object to becoming asciciated with the work of the Commission, which would be in the unture of conciliatory procedure under Paragraph Three of Article Fifteen of the League Covenant, with the object of reaching an agreed settlement...

Paragraph Three. Paragraph. Three rends; "The Council (or Assembly) shail ondes vour to offect a settlement of the disputa and, if such efforts are suc cessin, a statement shall be made public giving such facts and ex- planations regarding the dispute and the terms of settlement thereof as the Council (or Assembly) may deer appropriate.”. -

If after a given period (sixty days is mentioned) these efforts fail; then other methods will be resorted to and Paragraph. Four of theme Article, will probably operaba.

Paragraph Four... Paragraph Four reads: "If the dispute ie not thus settled, the Council (or Assembly), either un- animously or by a majority vote shall make and publish a report containing a statement of the facts of the disputa and the recommeniin- tions which are deemed just, and proper in regard thereto, la

If this course is adopted, and a rport and recommendations are drafted, as scema to be very likely, it would be hazardous to predict what would happen after that..

Mr Lingve Commit hus chours 'ed to Monday next so that apart from the meeting of the Comm sion on Thursday, the week likely to be very quiet.
