THE DUTY OF DRESS IS

FLATTERY

This is not a reason in which to order clothes carelessly. There are a great many very lovely models, for the evening hours and for the, day-time; but there are certain features which appear regularly in some of the collections and which are definitely difficult to wear;"per- haps particularly so for English- women in the English climate.

One of the chief danger points is the detail of shoulder and leeve treatment.

You see a huge, faring bow op one or perhaps both shoulders of an evening dress, and probably in- velvet. The neckline of the dress is usually quite shallow in front, but the back of the wearer down to the waist is hardly concealed at all.

On a very tall, very siender and legant woman with a good carri age this can be very satisfying. It tends to increase her already pleas ing slenderness and enhances the nentness of her head.

On a short woman, or onde with the faintest suggestion of round shoulders or a chin carried toð far forward, the effect is quite deplor able. It emphasises all 'her worst points and exhibits none of that flattery which is part of the duty of s good tiress.

There are other evening dresses whose lines de full justice to a good figure and help, an indifferent one. Many of the most pleasing are in velvet, sometimes plain and some-

Dark green is used a great deal by one of the best houses, in velvet, in silk piqué with a weave which is rather like fine chuvas, and in Faille. Sometimes the garment which, at first sight, appears to be a long and jelegant evening wrap turns out to be one of the waist length ones after all, but so gracefully is it blended with its dress that it is difficult to see where one enda and the other begins.

Quilting is a very old and roman tie work, coming back to fashion vin France, and appearing in a number af unexpected ways in pre- sont dress.

It was the entertainment and diversion of the spacious ladies of fashion of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and is the needlework for the woman who is convinced that she is no needle- woman. It is so easy, requiring simply the ability to do a run stitch, plus a spat of imagination.

The pattern is traced on domett, that part-wool, part-cotton material used for interlining fure. Your do mett is tacked firmly on the silk or cotton material to be quilted, and rigid tacking is' most essential, for you have to transfer the beauty of your whole pattern to the piece of work by a mere run stitch."
