Although more expensive to the. consumer, Empire teas are actually. cheaper to the distributors than last year, even with the duty included.

The following statistics show the weekly average of price per lb. and the number of parkages offered for sale lust week. These, when com- pared with the figures for the cor- raponding week, 1931, show a con- siderable decline in price and an increase in offerings. In the case of the Dutchgrown teas of Java and Sumatra, though faced with the preferential duty, their offerings are not much less than last year.

This depression is largely due to the fact that distributors bought big quantities of tea before the dution name into force, so that they have still adequate supplies on hand. The increase in packages offerod is explained by the exceptionally good Indian crop.

The Morning Post understands that several firms of tea-growers have written to the India Ten As sociation, requesting it to take ad- visory steps with the Government. A higher preferential duty has been recommended, with the alternative of a quota system for Dutch ten.

Meanwhile, expenses having been cut in every possible way, the pro- ducers will be faced with grave conboquetices unless market prices rise
