inflammable.
The Safety of Life at Sea Con- ventions of London provide for the installation of a certain amount' of equipment for fighting and limiting outbreaks of fire on ships. There does not exist in France nor in any other country, any fixed rules concerning the materials to be used! in merchant ships, from the point of view of combustibility or inflam- mability.
In the Navy.
On the other hand, in the case of English naval units the Admiral- ty, since 1914 has laid down very rigid rules. When the fittings are not of metal they must be thorough- ly fireproofed, the process employ being the Oxylene system. In addition, very carefully construct- ed fireproof. bulkheads are fitted in these ships.. The London Conyen- tions, as far as fireproof bulkheads ars concerned, are some what vague. In fact, on many ships the so-call. ed fireproof bulkheads are simply made of steel,
Now it must be quite evident that unless a bulkhead is, thorough, ly covered on both sides with as- bestos the steel will quickly become -red-hot-under-the-action-of-fire, and will be quite useless in pro venting the spread of the outbreak,
⠀ In the Royal Navy most of the | fireproof bulkheads are covered, with impregnated wooden panels, in two 'fayers, at distances of several cen- timetres. Under the action of an intense fire the "insulation_
"on" the side by the outbreak is destroyed slowly, but the lining on the other
side remains intact and at a normal temperatur
