TRIAL.
TWO CROWN WITNESSES SEVERELY CROSS- EXAMINED BY MR. JENKIN.

OPENING TO WITNESS.
At yesterday's hearing of the case in which Cheng Kwok Yau is charged with procuring the murder of Georgo Fúng on the night of March 34, Mr. F. C. Jenkin, for the defence, cross- `examined at length the witnesses, Taui Yung Sang and Ah To Nui, both of whom, Counsel reminded the Court, had been described by Mr. R. Mr. Jenkin asked the witness Ah To Nui regarding this and the latter replied: "I know nothing about it. I am unable to tell you how it was committed.".

what was said there.

I am not going to leave it like that. You have told us, and the Crown attaches much importance to this incident, that on March 10th an attempt was made to shoot Fung, at least arrangements were į made to shoot Fung and it did not Mr. Lindsell:-Assuming that come off -Yon. this glove was found by police |

Mr. Jenkin (to witness).-You remember saying yesterday that your party was Wong, yourself and Ah To-Nui. You said that in answer to the Crown Counsel, Mr. Lindsell -Yes, but I did not mean that at all. What I meant by say- ing my gang was "the party, not necessarily the men who were pre- hemt at the scene but the men who took active parts im the matter.
At the request of Mr. Jenkin, his Lordship read from his notes the passage involved.
The Chief Justice. This is the evidence I took down from you yesterday afternoon, speaking about the 18th March: "It was on in- formation received that I went there (that is No. 14). My party was myself. Ah Wong and Ah To Nui and there saw Fung with a lady."

OUR CONTINUED STORY THE BALLOON BOY.
THE place that Edwin liked best was the swimming hole at the creek. A big tree siled it, and it was a favourite spot for the boys to meet. He could swim as well as any tol then, and he was so quick at water tag that they hardly ever caught him.
One sultry day they were all splashing about happily. Dan look- od over at Edwin and chuckled.
"Did you see Edwin squirm
when he saw that big caterpillar "He in the bushes 1" he asked. was almost as green as the cater. pillar, himself."
Edwin floated for a minute with. out answering.
"I know that fellow will make handsome math," he saidly slow
but--I can't help wriggling a bit when I look at him,"
ly,
Paul ran out the diving
board.
сп
"Forget it!" be called.. "Hero goes!"
Ha disappeared into the water, and the boys watched idly. He'd Frobably come up quietly and pinch someone's toes.
But he didn't. They looked at each other, startled. Then there was a sudden scramble, a patter of bars feet, and a figure shot from the diving board.. It was Edwin. Ha cut the water, and the boys elimbed out on the bank to watch. "Hut for help!" cried Dan.
Get in and. hunt for Paul! ''' shouted Tommy.
Loon began to run, calling "Help! Help!" but it was some distance to the nearest house.
