A scientific discovery of the frat importance to the Empire has been made by men whose work it is to grapple daily with the problems of our Imperial food supplies and their transport.
Its application to commerce will make possible the diversion from foreign to Empire sources of some thing like £20 millions of trade an- nually.
Hitherto it has not been possible to bring chilled beef from Austra lia because of the time taken in transport. Freezing, though having no' injurious effect on lamb and muliou, is harmful to the texture of beef. In chill, beef keeps for about five weeks. It
