that a great Empire should have a strong and powerful financial centre capable of responding at all times to the obligations inherent in that position, but also that a sound curmucy and unquestionable credit are equally essential for auch a centre, both from an Imperial and from an

International point of view. It must be assumed that the foundations of the Empico can only reat with security and safety if

rooted upon the high idents in re- gard to integrity and the fulfil ment of legal and moral obligations, which are

characteristics of the British race. In any Empire cur rency system which may be evolved, London must inevitably play an outstanding part, but if she is to discharge her difficult functions successfully, it is necessary that her credit shall be maintained at the highest possible ievel and that the reputation she

now enjoys shall ant be impaired through the adop tion of measures which in any way fall short of the standarda establish- ed in the past. It is therefor clear that many of the stops that have been recommended, some of which would seriously affect British credit abroad, should not be taken without the utmost deliberation as to what the consequences might be.

But if London is to perform her task as the financial centre of the Empire to the maximum advantage of every member, she must be in a position to command adequate re- sources, most of which must Lo sup- plied by Great Britain

Until the position of Great Britain has been sufficiently strengthened and confidence restored so as to en- able her to resume her former råle, the recovery in World trade must continue to be seriously retarded.

* News and Views ⭑

J. Attch

It is said that Mr. J. H. Thomas received a strong hint before he left for Ottawa to be more careful in his conversation with the big-wiga of Canada than he was three years $80.

He deeply offended Sir Joseph Flavell, a venerable old gentleman, by lightheartedly replying, when he was asked what were the duties then held "I'm blowed if I of Lord Privy Seal, the office he

know." Humour is easily mis- understood.

One business talk was cut short, after Mr. Thomas had indulged his eccontricities very freely, by Sir John Aird saying gravely: I do not see that any good purpose could bo served by continuing this con- versation."

The News Loft Out

London listeners are declaring that they have a real grievance against the B.B.C. for not broad casting in their news the result of big trials that are om all the pla- cards next morning.

The Miners' Leader.

Sir Norman is still a hostile to National Labour and intends to re- main so. He is spending the sum mer on his island in one of those wide arms of the sea which pierce the Essex coast. Ho lives un a house-boat, leaving the farmhouse to a tenant. His health is much better there, judging by his looks, than it is in the Temple, where he lives during the winter.

Tragic Horse Sales.

An Echo of the venture of two newspaper men, both dead within a few weeks of one another, was heard at Newmarket during the

week.

The broad mares owned by the at Edgar Wallace and the late Archie Falcon were offered for sale. The two friends bad at one time been very sanguine about their pro- spects of breeding valuable horses, and had embarked substan- tial aums in the venture.
