No. 10-MR. J. R. JOHNSTONE AND MR. D. LYON.
HOLDERS OF SWIMMING RECORDS.
[BY SALADIN.]
In the aquatic history of the Co- tony, Mr. J. R. Johnstone and Mr. D. Lyon rank ninong the post pro minent swimmers, Each made his mark by a series of splendid per-1 formances over a number of years which have, without donhi, dane much to improve the standard of awimming locally. Between them salves, the two now hold the records for the most important champion- stripa, with the exception of the Harbour Race, dividing honours for the best times in the 100, 290, 440 and 880 Yards, which are consider. ed the best test of speed and stamina combined. At one time or Another cash has held the recorda for those events, and for several years broke the other's records. Hong Kong has not seen such fine individual swimmers since Mr. Lyon and Mr. Johnstone retired from competitive swimming in 1928 and 1929 respectively, but their achieve nents seem to be the envy of those who are at present taking up swim- nning seriously, and should serve
excellent examples for the am bitious, enterprising and progres. sive to emulate.
MIR, JOHNSTONE:
Spectacular Come-back.
After a couple of seasons absence from the Colony, Mr. Johnstong made a spectacular come-back in 1920. In that year he excelled all his past achievements, and in win- ning all the major events, ha dis- tinguished himself as having had the most successful season for any individual swimmer. The 100, 220, 440, 880 Yards Championships and
even the Harbour Race all went to him, but that was not all. He established records, which to date still stand, in no less than three, ovents, these being:-
220 Yards

His time for the 100 Yards fell short of only 1/8th of a second of the record. He was then in the pink of condition, and gained the admiration of the gallery by his splendid performances.
Shanghai Championships. Mr. Johnstone has also acquitted himself with distinction at Shang- hai, and besides representing Hong Kong in saveral of the annual in- terport series with that pork, spent n couple of summers there. In 1928
he set up two records in the Shang-

Those times, latter: In this event the ex stood untouched until last year tha champion has had no equal, as he when new records were established repeated his success, in 1920, 1021, for the 220 and 440 Yards, but that 10, 1928 (tying with Mr. Cooke) for the 880 Yards is still unbeaten. His principal successes there were and 1920. Mr. Johnstone not only established the most, number of as follows:- wing, but has also held the record wince 1916, his time of 13 mins, 17 seca, standing till 1929 when he im- roved it by brilliantly bringing the time down to 11 mins, and 57. 2/6 seca. (It must be mentioned that before 1999 the course was in tha-open, i.e. batween the Praya Wall and the V.R.C. landing, while since then it has been in the en closed camber.)
